ولمّا وقفَنا للوَداعِ عَشيّةً

ولمّا وقفَنا للوَداعِ عَشيّةً

وَطَرفي وقَلبي أدمعٌ وخُفُوقُ

وَطَرفي وقَلبي أدمعٌ وخُفُوقُ

And when we stood to say farewell one evening,

And when we stood to bid farewell one eve

With my eye all tears and my heart all throbbing,

While my eyes and heart were weeping, sorely grieved

بكيتُ فأضحكتُ الوُشاةَ شَماتَةً

بكيتُ فأضحكتُ الوُشاةَ شَماتَةً

كأنّي سحابٌ والوُشاةُ بروقُ

كأنّي سحابٌ والوُشاةُ بروقُ

I wept, making the slanderers laugh in gloating,

I wept and so made those who envied laugh in glee

As though I were a cloud and the slanderers flashes of lightning.

As though I were a raincloud and they lightning brief
