مَن عاذرٌ لي ومَن للصبِّ يَعذُرُهُ
منon account of ناقِضِone who breaks العهدِthe pledge يَنْسانيhe forgets me وأذكُرُهُand I remember him
من ناقِضِ العهدِ يَنْساني وأذكُرُهُ
Who will excuse me, and who will excuse the lovesick lover
Who excuses me, and who excuses the passionate one
For loving a pledge-breaker who forgets me while I remember him?
Who forgets the covenant, forgets me, yet I remember him
يَقْتَادُنيleads me نحوَهtoward him شَوقيmy longing ويَصْرِفُنيand turns me away
يَقْتَادُني نحوَه شَوقي ويَصْرِفُني
خوفيmy fear عليهfor him فأهواهُso I love him وأهجرُهُand forsake him
خوفي عليه فأهواهُ وأهجرُهُ
My longing draws me toward him, yet I am turned away
My longing pulls me toward him, my fear for him pushes me away
By my fear for him; so I love him and forsake him.
So I love him and shun him
تَرىsees محاسِنَهُhis charms عَيْنِيmy eye وتُعرِضُand turns away عنfrom
تَرى محاسِنَهُ عَيْنِي وتُعرِضُ عن
قَبِيحِthe ugliness of أفعالِهِhis deeds أوor ليسَdoes not تُبْصِرهُsee it
قَبِيحِ أفعالِهِ أو ليسَ تُبْصِرهُ
My eye sees his charms and turns away from
My eyes see his beauty but overlook
The ugliness of his deeds—or does not see it.
His ugly deeds - or don't they see him?
يأتيhe comes بماwith what ساءَنِيhurt me عمداًdeliberately فأعذرُهُyet I excuse him
يأتي بما ساءَنِي عمداً فأعذرُهُ
ويَظهرُand becomes apparent الغدرُtreachery ليto me منهُfrom him فأُنكِرُهُyet I deny it
ويَظهرُ الغدرُ لي منهُ فأُنكِرُهُ
He deliberately does what hurts me, yet I excuse him.
He wrongs me intentionally, yet I excuse him
And his treachery becomes plain to me, yet I deny it.
His betrayal is evident, yet I deny it
