وهاجَand stirred ليَfor me الشوقَthe longing القديمَold حَمامةٌa dove
علىon غُصُنٍa branch فيin غَيْضَةٍa thicket تترنّمُshe sings
And a dove stirred the old longing within me,
The old longing stirred in me, a dove
Singing on a branch in a thicket.
On a branch, cooing in a shaded dell,
دعتْshe called out شجوَهاher sorrow محزونةًsorrowful لمdid not تَفضْflow لهاfor her
دُمُوعٌtears ففاضتso flowed أدمُعِيmy tears مَزْجُهاtheir mixture دمُblood
She voiced her sorrow mournfully, though she shed no
Her sad murmurs left her no relief,
Tears; so my tears flowed, mingled with blood.
No tears came, but mine began to well,
فقلتُso I said لهاto her إنif كنتyou are خنساءَal-Khansa لوعةًanguish
ووجداًand grief فإنّيthen indeed I فيin البكاءِweeping متمّمُMutammim
So I said to her, "If you are al-Khansa in anguish
I said: Sing on if grief you feel,
And grief, then in weeping I am Mutammim."
For I weep still for loves of yore.
