فَليسَfor there is no بَعدafter الموتِdeath دارٌan abode سِوىexcept
فَليسَ بَعد الموتِ دارٌ سِوى
جنَّةِa garden عَدْنٍEden أوor لَظىًa fierce flame تَضرَمُblazes
جنَّةِ عَدْنٍ أو لَظىً تَضرَمُ
For after death there is no abode except
After death, there is no abode but
the Garden of Eden or a fire that blazes.
The Garden of Eden or a blazing flame.
والموعِدُand the appointed meeting الحشرُthe Gathering ونُجزَىand we are recompensed عنfor الthe
والموعِدُ الحشرُ ونُجزَى عن ال
أعمالِdeeds والغبنُand the loss لمنfor whoever يَندَمُregrets
أعمالِ والغبنُ لمن يَندَمُ
And the appointed meeting is the Gathering, and we are recompensed for the
And the time of Resurrection when we are rewarded for
deeds; loss belongs to whoever regrets.
Our deeds, and regret is for those who repent.
ويُنْصَفُand is granted justice المظلومُthe wronged person منagainst خَصمِهِhis adversary
ويُنْصَفُ المظلومُ من خَصمِهِ
ويستويand is equal السُّلطانُthe ruler والمُعدَمُand the destitute person
ويستوي السُّلطانُ والمُعدَمُ
And the wronged is granted justice against his adversary,
The oppressed shall be vindicated from their adversary,
and the ruler and the destitute are equal.
And the sultan and the destitute shall be equal.
ويشخَصُand goes forth الخلقُcreation إلىto حاكِمٍa judge
ويشخَصُ الخلقُ إلى حاكِمٍ
يحكُمjudges فيهمamong them بالّذيaccording to what يَعلَمُhe knows
يحكُم فيهم بالّذي يَعلَمُ
And all creation goes forth to a judge
People will stand before the Judge
who judges them according to what he knows.
Who will judge them for what He knows.
ولِلّياليand for the nights واعظٌan admonisher صامتٌsilent
ولِلّيالي واعظٌ صامتٌ
يُسمِعُناmakes us hear لوif أنّناthat we نَفهَمُwe understand
يُسمِعُنا لو أنّنا نَفهَمُ
And the nights have a silent admonisher,
The nights have a silent preacher,
who would make us hear, if only we understood.
If only we understood what he says.
والنّاسُand people فيin الدّنياthis world نيامٌasleep وماand how
والنّاسُ في الدّنيا نيامٌ وما
أسرعَswift ماthe act of يستيقظُawaken النُّوَّمُthe sleepers
أسرعَ ما يستيقظُ النُّوَّمُ
And people in this world are asleep—and how
People are asleep in this life, how
swiftly the sleepers awaken!
Quickly the sleepy will awaken.
ويقدَمُand comes الخلقُcreation علىupon وِزْرِthe burden of sin ماwhat
ويقدَمُ الخلقُ على وِزْرِ ما
تَقَلَّدواthey took upon themselves أوor أجرِthe reward ماwhat قَدَّمُواthey sent ahead
تَقَلَّدوا أو أجرِ ما قَدَّمُوا
And all creation comes to face the burden of what
Creation will come with the burden of
they took upon themselves, or the reward for what they sent ahead.
What they took on themselves or the reward of what they forwarded.
