يقولونَthey say ماnot يَشفيcures المُحِبَّthe lover منof الجوىlove's anguish
يقولونَ ما يَشفي المُحِبَّ من الجوى
سِوَىexcept يأسِهِhis despair واليأسُand despair أَفتَكُthe deadliest دائيmy ailment
سِوَى يأسِهِ واليأسُ أَفتَكُ دائي
They say nothing cures the lover of his anguish
They say nothing cures the lover's pain
Except his despair—and despair is my deadliest ailment.
Except despair, and despair only makes my malady worse
فكيفَhow, then أرَجِّيI hope for بُرءَrecovery سُقميmy sickness مِنfrom الهوىlove
فكيفَ أرَجِّي بُرءَ سُقمي مِن الهوى

ودائي الّذي يقضي عليَّ دوائي
How, then, can I hope to recover from my lovesickness,
How can I hope for my love-sickness to be cured
When my ailment, which kills me, is my remedy?
When the very cure brings about my demise
