وكمand how many مِنof كريمٍa noble man قدindeed أَضَرَّharmed بِهِto him الهوىlove
وكم مِن كريمٍ قد أَضَرَّ بِهِ الهوى
فَعَوَّدَهso it accustomed him ماwhat لمْnot يَكُنْhe was يَتَعَوَّدُhe would grow accustomed to
فَعَوَّدَه ما لمْ يَكُنْ يَتَعَوَّدُ
And how many a noble man has been afflicted by love,
How many noble men have been harmed by passion's sway
Which made him accustomed to what he had never been used to.
It trained them in ways they were not used to in their day
