إِليكَto you أشكوI complain عَرْقَravages دهرٍan age ذيpossessing خَبَلْruin
وعَيَلاَand dependents شُعْثاًdisheveled صِغاراًsmall كالحَجَلْlike partridges
To you I complain of the ravages of a ruinous age,
To you I lament the sweat of an epoch insane,
And little, disheveled dependents, like partridges,
and orphans clothed in tatters small as gravel,
وأُمَّهمْand their mother تهتِفُcries out تستكسيasks to be clothed الحُلَلْgarments
قدindeed طارَhas flown عنهاaway from her دِرْعُهاher shift ماso long as لمnot يُخَلْis fastened with pins
And their mother, crying out and asking for garments.
while their mother shrieks begging for dresses,
Indeed, her shift flies off her unless pinned together.
her coat of mail lost before she could disarm.
ياO ربُّLord ياO ربّاهُmy Lord إِيّاكَYou alone أَسَلْI ask
عفراءُAfraa ياO ربّاهُmy Lord منfrom قبلِbefore الأَجَلْthe appointed time of death
O Lord, O my Lord, You alone I ask
O Lord, O Lord of him I seek only you,
For Afraa, O my Lord, before death,
Brownie, O Lord before the finish line nears,
فإِنَّfor indeed عفراءَAfraa مِنَof الدْنياthis world الأَمَلْthe hope
لوif كَلَّمَتْshe spoke to رهبانَmonks دَيْرِa monastery فيon قَلَلْpeaks
For Afraa is my hope in this world.
for Brownie in this life hoped for more,
If she spoke to monks of a monastery on the peaks,
had she but spoken to the monks down in the valleys,
لَزَحَفَwould creep forward الرهبانُthe monks يمشيwalking وَزَحَلْand moved away
The monks would creep forward, walking and leaving their places.
they'd have crawled to walk toward her on their knees.
