أَفيis it over نابٍan old she-camel مَنَحناهاwe gave it فَقيراًa poor man
لَهُhe has بِطِنابِناbeside our tent-rope طُنُبٌa tent-rope مُصيتُwell-known
Is it over an old she-camel we gave a poor man—
whose tent-rope beside ours is well known—
وَفَضلَةِand a remnant of سَمنَةٍghee ذَهَبَتwent إِلَيهِto him
وَأَكثَرُand most of حَقِّهِhis due ماwhat لاdoes not يَفوتُlapse
and a remnant of ghee that went to him,
though most of his due can never lapse,
تَبيتُspends the night عَلىupon المَرافِقِthe elbows أُمُّmother of وَهبٍWahb
وَقَدand already نامَhave slept العُيونُthe eyes لَهاshe has كَتيتُa low groan
that Umm Wahb spends the night propped on her elbows,
groaning while other eyes have fallen asleep?
فَإِنَّfor indeed حَمِيتَناour ghee-skin أَبَداًalways حَرامٌforbidden
وَلَيسَand there is no لِجارِfor the neighbor of مَنزِلِناour dwelling حَمِيتُa ghee-skin
For our ghee-skin is always forbidden to us
while our neighbor has no ghee-skin.
وَرُبَّتَand many a شُبعَةٍfull meal آثَرتُI gave preference فيهاin it
يَداًa hand جاءَتthat came تُغيرُraiding لَهاit has هَتيتُa low murmur
And at many a full meal I have given precedence
to a hand that came raiding with a low murmur.
يَقولُhe says الحَقُّthe rightful claim مَطلَبُهُits pursuit جَميلٌfair
وَقَدand indeed طَلَبواthey appealed إِلَيكَto you فَلَمbut did not يُقيتواthey obtain sustenance
He says, 'A rightful claim is fair to seek;
they have appealed to you, yet found no sustenance.'
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him أَلاcome now اِحيَlive وَأَنتَwhile you are حُرٌّfree
سَتَشبَعُyou will eat your fill فيin حَياتِكَyour life أَوor تَموتُyou die
So I told him, 'Come, live a free man:
you will eat your fill in your life, or die.'
إِذاif ماever فاتَنيit escapes me لَمdid not أَستَقِلهُI ask it back
حَياتيthroughout my life وَالمَلائِمُand reproaches لاdo not تَفوتُpass away
If something escapes me, I never ask it back
in all my life; but reproaches never pass away.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتshe knows سُلَيمىSulayma أَنَّthat رَأيِيmy judgment
وَرَأيَand the judgment of البُخلِmiserliness مُختَلِفٌdifferent شَتيتُfar apart
Sulayma knows that my way of thinking
and the way of miserliness are different, far apart;
وَأَنّيand that I لاnot يُرينيshows me البُخلَmiserliness رَأيٌany judgment
سَواءٌalike إِنif عَطِشتُI am thirsty وَإِنand if رُويتُI have drunk my fill
and that no judgment inclines me to miserliness,
whether I go thirsty or drink my fill;
وَأَنّيand that I حينَwhen تَشتَجِرُclash العَواليthe spearheads
حَواليaround me اللُبَّsound intellect ذوpossessed of رَأيٍjudgment زَميتُself-possessed
and that, when the spearheads clash
around me, I keep my wits, a man of sober judgment.
وَأُكفىand I am well served ماwhat عَلِمتُI know بِفَضلِby an abundance of عِلمٍknowledge
وَأَسأَلُand I ask ذاone possessed of البَيانِclear expression إِذاwhen عَميتُI cannot see
And ample knowledge serves me in what I know,
and I ask one who can explain when I cannot see.
