إِذاif آذاكَharms you مالُكَyour wealth فَاِمتَهِنهُthen spend it freely
لِجاديهِfor whoever asks for it وَإِنand even if قَرَعَbecame bare المَراحُthe livestock pen
If your wealth grows scant, put it to service
If your wealth harms you, spend it freely
for whoever seeks its bounty—even if the livestock enclosure lies bare.
on those who ask for it, even if the livestock pen is left bare.
وَإِنand if أَخنىbrought ruin عَلَيكَupon you فَلَمso did not تَجِدهُyou find it
فَنَبتُthen the plants الأَرضَof the earth وَالماءُand the water القَراحُpure
And if it deals harshly with you, do not disavow it;
And if ruin overtakes you and you cannot find it,
for there are the earth’s plants and water, pure and clear.
then the earth's plants and pure water will suffice.
فَرَغمُfor the humiliation العَيشِof life إِلفُhabitual attachment to فِناءِthe courtyard of قَومٍa people
وَإِنand even if آسوكَthey share with you وَالمَوتُand death الرَواحُrelief
For life’s abasement is attachment to a people’s courtyard,
For life's humiliation is to frequent the courtyard of others,
even if they sustain you—for death is release.
even if they share with you; death is relief.
