عَشِيَّةَon the evening بِتناwe spent the night عِندَby ماوانَMawan رُزَّحِexhausted
عَشِيَّةَ بِتنا عِندَ ماوانَ رُزَّحِ
I said to a band at al-Kanif, “Set out toward evening—
I told a group in the shelter: Set out at evening,
that evening when we camped by Mawan, worn with exhaustion—
the evening we spent the night by Mawan, exhausted,
تَنالواyou may gain الغِنىwealth أَوor تَبلُغواyou may reach بِنُفوسِكُمwith your own selves
تَنالوا الغِنى أَو تَبلُغوا بِنُفوسِكُم

إِلى مُستَراحٍ مِن حِمامٍ مُبَرِّحِ
so you may attain wealth, or bear your very lives
to gain wealth, or bring yourselves
to final rest through a grievous death.
to rest through an agonizing death.

مِنَ المالِ يَطرَح نَفسَهُ كُلَّ مَطرَحِ
Whoever, like me, has dependents and lives in straits,
And whoever is like me, with dependents and short
poor in wealth, will cast himself into every hazard,
of money, casts himself into every venture,

وَمَبلَغُ نَفسٍ عُذرَها مِثلُ مَنجَحِ
that he may make good his excuse or win a coveted prize;
to earn justification, or win a coveted prize;
for a soul’s exhausting its excuse is itself like success.
a soul’s earning its justification is as good as success.

Perhaps your fortunes will mend, after I behold
Perhaps you will fare better after what I see—
the thorn trees’ returning growth, freshened by the evening breeze.
the thorn-trees’ regrowing, freshly leafing shoots.
