I know of no disgrace in myself, I believe,
Except that my maternal uncles, when their lineage is traced, are Nahd.

When you seek glory, their glory falls short;
So it has proved impossible for glory to draw near me.

So, if only they had had no share in my descent,
And I were a slave among them, and my father a slave.

Foxes in war fought time and again; but if it dies down
And the great peril lifts, then they are lions.
