Qays wished for my exile, yet I

Surely fear, if your words should carry you away,

And our home become far removed from you,

Along with the sword's sheath with which you once struck—

(Keep to peace; embrace it whenever

It offers you lodging by night or rest at noon)—

That even the few may prove too much for you, until

You become theirs, and the lowly man devours you.

For if war's millstone were to turn,

And might surge forth, and the few be pursued,

You would cling behind us to the tail end of life,

When the sun stood high and would not decline.
