تُخَوِّفُنيshe frightens me with الأَعداءَthe enemies وَالنَفسُand the soul أَخوَفُmore fearful
I see Umm Hassan reproaching me this morning;
She warns me of enemies, though my own soul is more fearful.
تَقولُshe says سُلَيمىSulayma لَوif أَقَمتَyou stayed لِسِرِّناit would please us
وَلَمand did not تَدرِshe knew أَنّيthat I لِلمُقامِin order to stay أُطَوِّفُI roam
Sulayma says, “If you stayed, it would please us,”
Not knowing that I roam so I may stay.
لَعَلَّperhaps الَّذيthat which خَوَّفتِناyou made us fear مِنfrom أَمامِناahead of us
يُصادِفُهُhe encounters it فيamong أَهلِهِhis kin المُتَخَلِّفُthe one who stays behind
Perhaps the danger you warned us of ahead
Will find the man who stays behind among his kin.

Whenever I say, “Wealth has come,” in its way stands
A gaunt father of little children, lamenting poverty.

He has a need no rightful claim takes precedence over:
A noble man struck by calamities that sweep all away.
فَإِنّيfor I لَمُستافُsurely a scout of البِلادِthe lands بِسُربَةٍwith a band of horsemen
فَمُبلِغُand bringing نَفسيmy soul عُذرَهاits justification أَوor مُطَوَّفُcarried off by death
For I shall surely scout the lands with a band of horsemen,
And win my soul its justification—or be carried off by death.

I saw the sons of Lubna bearing disgrace;
Their homes lie amid the surrounding encampments.

I see Umm Siryah setting out at dawn among women in camel litters,
Gazing out from northern Iraq as she roams.
