I lay sleepless, my companions at the narrow pass of 'Umq,

because of lightning spreading far and wide in Tihamah.

Whenever I said, 'It has begun raining over Qudayd,'

its low clouds turned back like a crippled beast,

uncovering themselves like a piebald mare, newly foaled, driving

the stallions away from her young foal.

May it water Salma—and where are Salma's dwellings,

    when she settles near al-Sarir,

when she settles in the land of Banu 'Ali,

while my people are between Zamirah and Kir?

I remembered dwellings of Umm Wahb:

the tribe's campsite below Dhu al-Naqir.

And the last haunt I shared with Umm Wahb

was our overnight camp in the land of Banu al-Nadir.

And they said, 'What do you wish?' I said, 'To enjoy myself

    until morning, first and foremost,

with a woman of charming conversation, whose mouth's moisture

just after sleep is like juice pressed from grapes.'

I obeyed those who urged me to break with Salma,

and off they flew into the thorn trees of al-Yasta'ur.

They gave me wine to drink, then surrounded me—

    God's enemies—with lies and falsehood.

And they said, 'After Salma's ransom, you are

neither rich with what you possess nor poor.'

Ah, by your father, had my affairs then stood as they do today—

and who can assure you foresight in affairs?—

then I would surely have retained my marriage bond with Umm Wahb,

despite all the thorns of rancor in our breasts.

So, people, how could I force myself

    to something my conscience hates?

Ah, if only I had disobeyed Talq

and Jabbar—and who could protect me from Amir?
