هَلّاwhy not سَأَلتَyou asked بَنيthe sons of عَيلانَʿAylān كُلَّهُمُall of them
هَلّا سَأَلتَ بَني عَيلانَ كُلَّهُمُ
عِندَduring السِنينَthe famine years إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle هَبَّتِblew الريحُthe wind
عِندَ السِنينَ إِذا ما هَبَّتِ الريحُ
Why did you not ask all the sons of ʿAylān,
Why not ask the sons of 'Aylan, all of them,
In the famine years, when the wind blew?
When the years blow their wind?
قَدindeed حانَwon قِدحُlot-arrow عِيالِthe dependants of الحَيِّthe clan إِذwhen شَبِعواthey ate their fill
قَد حانَ قِدحُ عِيالِ الحَيِّ إِذ شَبِعوا
وَآخَرٌand another لِذَويfor those among الجِيرانِthe neighbors مَمنوحُbestowed
وَآخَرٌ لِذَوي الجِيرانِ مَمنوحُ
The clan's dependants drew a winning lot and ate their fill,
The time has come for the family of the alive when they are full,
And another is bestowed on the neighboring folk.
And another for the neighbors who are given.
