أَضحىhas become فُؤادَكَyour heart غَيرَoutside ذاتِa time of أَوانِdue season
بَلrather لَمnot يَرُعكَalarm you تَحَمُّلُthe departure of الجيرانِthe neighbors
Your heart has changed at an untimely hour.
Your heart is no longer the same as before
Yet the neighbors' departure did not alarm you.
Yet you did not care to endure the neighbors
بانواthey departed وَصَدَّعَand shattered بَينَهُمtheir bond شَعبَthe sundering of النَوىseparation
عَجَباًhow strange! كَذاكَthus تَقَلُّبُthe changing of الأَزمانِthe times
They departed, and separation's sundering shattered their bond.
They appeared and the people of Nawaa were divided
How strange—such is the changing of the times!
How strange is the turn of time
أَخطاmissed الرَبيعُspring بِلادَهُمtheir lands فَتَيَمَّنواso they headed for Yemen
وَلِحُبِّهِمand for love of them أَحبَبتُI loved كُلَّevery يَمانِYemeni
Spring passed their lands by, so they headed for Yemen.
Spring abandoned their country so they became destitute
And for love of them, I loved every Yemeni.
And for my love of them I loved all of Yemen
اللَهُGod يَرجِعُهُمbrings them back وَكُلُّand every مُجَلجِلٍthunder-rumbling cloud
واهيloosened, pouring freely العَزاليrain-spouts مُعلَمَmarked out الأَوطانِhaunts
May God and every thunder-rumbling cloud bring them back—
God will return them and every wavering one
Its rain-spouts pouring freely, its haunts clearly marked.
The desolate dwellings are signs of homelands
وَلَقَدand indeed أَبيتُI spend the night ضَجيعَthe bedfellow of كُلِّevery مُخَضَّبٍhenna-dyed woman
Indeed, I would spend the night as bedfellow to every henna-dyed beauty,
And I refused to sleep on any bloodstained bed
With tender fingertips and fragrant sleeves,
Cheap bedspreads of aromatic juniper
يَمشيwalks يَميدُsways كَمِشيَةِlike the gait of النَشوانِone intoxicated
Her clothes scented with perfume, her figure well-proportioned.
Clothes perfumed with fragrance soaked
She walks, swaying with a drunkard's gait.
Walking slowly like the gait of an afflicted one
دَعصٌa rounded sandhill مِنَamong الأَنقاءِsand dunes إِنif هِيَshe أَدبَرَتturns away
أَوor أَقبَلَتcomes forward فَكَصَعدَةِthen like a straight spear-shaft of المُرّانِash wood
A rounded sandhill among the dunes when she turns away,
A branch of the virtuous, whether coming or going
Or, when she approaches, like a straight ash-wood spear-shaft.
Is like the ascent of myrrh
يَجريflows عَلَيهاover her كُلَّماwhenever اِغتَسَلَتshe bathes بِهِin it
فَضلُthe excess of الحَميمِwarm water يَجولُcourses كَالمَرجانِlike coral
Over her flows, whenever she bathes in it,
Running over it whenever it is washed
The excess warm water, rolling like coral beads.
Is the excess of steaming heat flowing like coral
سَقِياًmay rain bless لِدارِهُمُtheir dwelling الَّتيwhich كانواthey were بِهاin it
إِذwhen لاnot يَزالُceases رَسولُهُمtheir messenger يَلقانيmeets me
May rain bless their dwelling, where they once lived,
Irrigating their house in which they were
When their messenger kept meeting me.
When their messenger still comes to me
وَلَقَدand indeed خَشيتُI feared بِأَنthat أَلُجَّI might persist obstinately بِهَجرِكُمin forsaking you
إِنَّindeed الحَبيبَthe beloved مُذَهِّلُbewildering to الإِنسانِa person
Indeed, I feared I might persist obstinately in forsaking you.
And I feared to be afflicted with your estrangement
Truly, the beloved bewilders a person.
For a lover bewilders a person
بَلrather جُنَّwent mad قَلبُكَyour heart أَنwhen بَدَتappeared لَكَto you دارُهاher dwelling
جَزَعاًin anguish وَكِدتَand you nearly تَبوحُspeak openly بِالكِتمانِof what was kept secret
Rather, your heart went mad when her dwelling appeared to you,
But your heart was hurt when her house appeared to you
In anguish—and you almost revealed what you had concealed.
In anguish, you almost confessed in secret
