لِمَنbelonging to whom? دِمَنٌcampsite remains بِخَيفِat the Khayf of مِنىًMina قَفورُdesolate
كَأَنَّas though عِراصَopen courtyards مَغناهاtheir dwelling الزَبورُthe written scroll
Whose are the desolate campsite remains at the Khayf of Mina?
For one whose blood ties to me have grown cold with disdain,
As though the open courts of their dwelling were a written scroll.
As though the hornet's buzzing had deafened his hearing,
مَنازِلُdwellings أَقفَرَتbecame deserted مِنwithout أُمِّmother of عَمروٍAmr
وَلَوand even if طالَgrew long اللَياليthe nights وَالدُهورُand the ages
Dwellings left desolate without Umm Amr.
The abodes of Umm 'Amr lie desolate,
Even if the nights and ages grow long,
Though the nights and ages be prolonged.
فَلاso not يَنسىforget فُؤادُكَyour heart أُمَّmother of عَمروٍAmr
وَلَوand even if طالَgrew long اللَياليthe nights وَالشُهورُand the months
Still, your heart will not forget Umm Amr,
So your heart cannot forget Umm 'Amr,
Even if the nights and months grow long.
Though the nights and months drag on.
أَقولُI say وَشَفَّand became translucent سِجفُcurtain القَزِّthe silk عَنهاfrom her
أَشَمسٌis it a sun? تِلكَthat one أَمor قَمَرٌa moon مُنيرُradiant
I say, as the silk curtain reveals her:
I declare, as the bowl of Qaz conceals her,
"Is that a sun, or a radiant moon?"
Is she a radiant sun or a shining moon?
وَيَسَّرَهاand made her accessible لَناto us المَيمونُthe auspicious one حَتّىuntil
لَقَيناهاwe met her بِبَطنِin the valley of مِنىًMina تَسيرُshe walks
And the auspicious one eased our way to her, until
Good fortune brought her close to us, till
We met her walking in the valley of Mina.
We met her in Mina proceeding on her way.
فَحَيَّتthen she greeted وَاِستَهَلَّand began to pour الدَمعُthe tears مِنّيfrom me
لِعِبرَتِهاbecause of her weeping عَلىover خَدٍّa cheek يَمورُsurges
Then she greeted me, and tears began to pour from me,
She greeted me and tears began to flow
At her weeping, coursing over a cheek.
Down her cheek in rivulets of sorrow.
فَقالَتthen she said حُلتَyou turned away عَنfrom عَهديmy pledge وَوُدّيand my love
جَديدٌfresh ماas long as حَيّتُI live لَكُمfor you يَسيرُreadily available
Then she said, "You have turned from my pledge, while my love
She said, "You have abandoned your pact and love for me.
Is fresh as long as I live, and readily yours.
It was no slight thing to bid you farewell."
وَطاوَعتَand you obeyed الوُشاةَthe slanderers وَزُرتَand you visited مَنone who لَمdid not
يَزُركَvisit you وَقَدand indeed تَبَيَّنَbecame clear ليto me الخُتورُthe treachery
And you heeded the slanderers and visited one who did not
"You have indulged the backbiters and visited those
Visit you; now the treachery is clear to me.
Who never visited you - the treachery is clear to me.
وَلَمand did not تَرعَpreserve الوِصالَthe loving bond كَماas رَعَيناwe preserved
وَبانَتand became evident مِنكَfrom you ليto me عَمداًdeliberately أُمورُdeeds
And you did not preserve our bond as we did,
You have not maintained the bond as we maintained it,
And deliberate deeds of yours became clear to me.
And your intentions towards me are manifestly evil.
وَلَمand did not تَجزِrepay القُروضُthe favors owed وَلَمand did not تُثِبهاrequite them
وَأَنتَand you لِكُلِّfor every صالِحَةٍgood deed كَفورُdeeply ungrateful
You did not repay favors, nor requite them,
You have not repaid your debts or made them binding,
And you are ungrateful for every good deed."
While you show ingratitude for every kindness."
حَلَفتُI swore لَهاto her بِرَبِّby the Lord of مِنىًMina إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle
تَغَيَّبَbecame hidden فيin عَجاجَتِهِمtheir dust cloud ثَبيرُThabir
I swore to her by the Lord of Mina, when
I swore to her by the Lord of Mina, that when
Thabir was hidden in their cloud of dust:
The throngs return from their clamor,
لَأَنتُمyou are indeed حِبُّbeloved شَيءٍthing إِنif جَلَسناwe stay
وَإِنand if زُرناwe visit فَأَوجَهُthen the most esteemed مَنthose whom نَزورُwe visit
"You are indeed the dearest of all, if we stay,
"You will still be loved if we sit together,
And if we visit, the most esteemed of those we visit.
And the object of my visit if we exchange visits."
فَإِنso if كُنتِyou were البِعادَseparation أَرَدتِyou desired عَنّيfrom me
فَقَلبيthen my heart عَنfrom بِعادِكُمُseparation from you نَفورُaverse
So if you have desired separation from me,
"But if you intend to distance yourself from me,
Then my heart recoils from separation from you."
Then my heart recoils from your estrangement."
