مَنwho لِقَلبٍfor a heart عِندَwith الرَبابِal-Rabab عَميدِstricken with love
مَن لِقَلبٍ عِندَ الرَبابِ عَميدِ
غَيرِnot ماemphatic particle مُفتَدىًransomed وَلاnor مَردودِreturned
غَيرِ ما مُفتَدىً وَلا مَردودِ
Who will aid a heart, lovesick in al-Rabab's keeping,
He whose heart is led on by the musician
neither ransomed nor returned?
Has no protection or escape
قَرَّبَتهُshe drew it close بِالوَعدِwith a promise حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle
قَرَّبَتهُ بِالوَعدِ حَتّى إِذا ما
تَبَّلَتهُshe made it lovesick لَمdid not توفِfulfill بِالمَوعودِwhat was promised
تَبَّلَتهُ لَم توفِ بِالمَوعودِ
She drew it close with a promise, until, when
She lures him with promises until
she had made it lovesick, she did not fulfill what she had promised.
When she has him under her spell, she fails to fulfill them
آنِسٌwelcoming دَلُّهاher coy charm قَريبٌnear فَمَنso whoever يَسhe hears (first fragment)
آنِسٌ دَلُّها قَريبٌ فَمَن يَس
مَعhe hears (final fragment) يَقُلhe says ماnot نَوالُهاher favors بِبَعيدِfar away
مَع يَقُل ما نَوالُها بِبَعيدِ
Her coy charm is welcoming and within reach, so whoever
A charming companion seems near at hand
hears it says, 'Her favors are not far away.'
But who can really say her gifts are not far off
وَالَّذيand whoever جَرَّبَtested المَواعِدَthe promises قَدindeed يَعhe knows (first fragment)
وَالَّذي جَرَّبَ المَواعِدَ قَد يَع
لَمُhe knows (final fragment) مِنهاfrom her أَنthat لَنwill not تُنيلَshe bestows بِجودِgenerously
لَمُ مِنها أَن لَن تُنيلَ بِجودِ
And whoever has tested her promises surely
And he who has tested her trysts may come to know
knows from her that she will not give generously.
That her goodness will never be attained
