What ails your heart, that it is ceaselessly stirred

By memories whose ultimate aftermath is sickness?

The memory of her who visited you by night among riding camels,

Walking with her lute while you were consecrated for pilgrimage.

Does she seek your death, or a recompense for affection?

Indeed, a companion has a claim upon your loyalty.

Fate and an overpowering doom have driven me

Away from her, as have death's vicissitudes and mortal doom.

I was once richer in folly and youthful passion—

How strange are the things the days bring!

And now I excuse her, and know that

The paths of error and guidance are but allotted shares.

If your home lies far away, I will visit you; and if I die,

Then upon you, from me, be mercy and peace.
