Today you forsook the beloved, though he had done no wrong.

And you cut the cord with one who loves you, so it snapped.

You obeyed the spiteful tale-bearers; and whoever obeys

a tale-bearer's words will strike his tooth in regret.

A messenger came to me, whom I had thought

compassionate toward us, a sincere adviser, as he claimed.

Then, when we exchanged talk, and there came to light

from his secrets some of what he had concealed,

it became clear to me that the one incited to discord was a liar.

And whoever heeds tale-bearers, or what anyone alleges,

unjustly severs his cord with his close companion

soon, and severs the cord's strand whenever he cuts.

And I said to her, when I feared stubbornness:

So I offer you amends, despite anyone who resents it.

You were wronged and made no reproach; and her messenger was

quick to reach you, bringing you satisfaction when he had done wrong.

So I saw no reason for self-reproach after what had passed,

and after the oaths she swore and you swore.

If you do not fall in love and do not follow passion,

then be a rock at al-Hijr, of unyielding stone.
