They blame me, though I have committed no sin,

while someone else is more to blame for all that happened.

I trusted people whom you yourselves trust,

so they exaggerated the talk against us and misled others.

And they ascribed to us words we never spoke, then said still more

against us, and divulged what I had kept hidden.

And my eye has been lined with grit at parting from you,

and its torrent of tears has returned, so it pours them forth.

So do not forsake me if you see that I love you.

I confess my sin; indeed, I am the greater wrongdoer.

Delicately nurtured—if tiny ants crept over her body,

the ants' creeping over her body would almost wound it.

Is it not too much that we should be in the same town,

both of us dwelling there, yet not speaking?
