فَلَمّاthen when اِلتَقَيناwe met وَاِطمَأَنَّتand grew still بِناwith us النَوىseparation
وَغُيِّبَand was kept away عَنّاfrom us مَنthose whom نَخافُwe fear وَنُشفِقُand dread
Then, when we met and separation let us rest,
And those we feared and dreaded were kept away from us,
أَخَذتُI took بِكَفّيwith my palm كَفَّهاher palm فَوَضَعتُهاthen I placed it
عَلىupon كَبِدٍa liver مِنfrom خَشيَةِfear of البَينِparting تَخفِقُthrobs
I took her palm in mine and laid it
Upon a liver throbbing from fear of parting.
فَقالَتthen she said لِأَترابٍto companions of the same age لَهاof hers حينَwhen أَيقَنَتshe became certain
بِماof what قَدmay أُلاقيI endure إِنَّindeed ذاthis man لَيسَis not يَصدُقُhe tells the truth
Then she said to her companions of the same age, when she was certain
Of what I might endure, "This man is not telling the truth."
فَقُلنَthen they said أَتَبكيdoes it weep? عَينُthe eye of مَنone who لَيسَis not موجَعاًin pain
كَئيباًgrief-stricken وَمَنand whoever هُوَhe ساهِرُawake through اللَيلِthe night يَأرَقُlies sleepless
They said, "Does the eye of one without anguish weep,
Without sorrow? And whoever keeps vigil at night lies sleepless."
فَقالَتthen she said أَرىI see هَذاthis اِشتِياقاًlonging وَإِنَّماand only
دَعاcalled forth دَمعَtears ذيone possessing القَلبِthe heart الخَلِيِّfree of love التَشَوُّقُyearning
She said, "I see this as longing; it was only
Yearning that summoned the tears of one whose heart is free of love."
فَقُلنَthen they said شَهِدناwe bear witness أَنَّthat ذاthis man لَيسَis not كاذِباًa liar
وَلَكِنَّهُbut he فيماin what يَقولُhe says مُصَدَّقُworthy of belief
They said, "We bear witness that this man is no liar,
But he is to be believed in what he says."
فَقُمنَthen they rose لِكَيin order to يُخلينَناthey leave us alone فَتَرَقرَقَتand welled up
مَدامِعُtears عَينَيهاher two eyes فَظَلَّتand kept on تَدَفَّقُstreaming
Then they rose to leave us alone, and there welled up
The tears in her eyes, and they kept on streaming.
فَقالَتthen she said أَماwill you not? تَرحَمنَنيyou pity me لاdo not تَدَعنَنيyou leave me
لَدَيهِwith him وَهوَand he فيماin what عَلِمتُنَّyou women know أَخرَقُclumsy
She said, "Will you not pity me? Do not leave me
With him—he is, as you know, clumsy."
فَقُلنَthen they said اِسكُتيbe silent عَنّاaway from us فَغَيرُfor not مَطاعَةٍobeyed
لَهُindeed he بِكِwith you مِنّاthan we are فَاِعلَميso know ذاكَthat أَرفَقُgentler
They said, "Hush, leave us be! You will not be obeyed;
He is gentler with you than we are—know that."
فَقالَتthen she said فَلاso do not تَبرَحنَyou women move away ذاthis السِترَthe curtain إِنَّنيindeed I
أَخافُI fear وَرَبِّby the Lord of الناسِhumankind مِنهُof him وَأَفرَقُand I am terrified
She said, "Then do not move away from this curtain; I
Fear him—by the Lord of humankind—and am terrified."
