الريحُthe wind تَسحَبُdrags أَذيالاًtrailing skirts وَتَنشُرُهاand spreads them
ياO لَيتَنيwould that I كُنتُI was مِمَّنamong those whom تَحسَبُcounts الريحُthe wind
The wind drags trailing skirts and spreads them out.
The wind drags its train and spreads it
Oh, would that I were among those the wind counts,
Oh, if only I were one of those the wind supposes
كَيماso that تَجُرَّit might drag بِناwith us ذَيلاًa trailing skirt فَتَطرَحناthen cast us
عَلىupon الَّتيthe woman who دونَهاbefore her مُغبَرَّةٌdust-covered سوحُopen spaces
So it might drag us along in a trailing skirt, then cast us
So it would drag us, tail-like, and cast us
Upon her, beyond the dust-covered open spaces.
Upon her whom is dusty and desolate plains
أَنّىhow بِقُربِكُمُnearness to you أَمor كَيفَhow ليfor me بِكُمُwith you
هَيهاتَfar beyond reach ذَلِكَthat ماas long as أَمسَتremains لَناfor us روحُlife
How can I come near you, or how can I be with you?
How can I be near you or how can I have you
That is far beyond reach, so long as life remains in us.
Alas! That is not for us anymore
فَلَيتَso, would that ضِعفَtwice الَّذيwhat أَلقىI endure يَكونُwould be بِهاin her
بَلrather لَيتَwould that ضِعفَtwice الَّذيwhat أَلقىI endure تَباريحُagonizing pangs
So, would that twice what I endure befell her;
If only the one who created separation would become weak
Rather, would that the torments were twice what I endure.
No, if only the one who created parting would become feeble

One of my paternal uncle's little daughters—before her dwelling
One of my uncle's daughters, not far from her abode
Lies land with yarrow and wormwood in its low-lying flats.
A land of wormwood and spurge is its valley
