The heart awoke ill,
The heart grew sick
It returned to love afresh,
Love returned feverish
وَأَجَدَّand renewed الشَوقَlonging وَهناًat night
إِذwhen رَأىit saw بَرقاًlightning وَميضاgleaming
And renewed its longing at night,
And longing grew frail
when it saw lightning gleam.
When it saw a fleeting flash
ثُمَّthen باتَspent the night الرَكبُthe caravan نُوّاasleep (word begins)
ماًasleep (word ends) وَلَمand did not يَطعَمtaste غُموضاsleep
Then the caravan spent the night asleep,
Then the caravan spent the night thirsty
while the heart tasted no sleep.
And tasted no sweetness

وَدَّعَleft behind القَلبَthe heart مَهيضاshattered
That came from Hind long ago,
That was long ago in India
leaving the heart shattered,
When the heart bid farewell distressed
إِذwhen تَبَدَّتshe appeared ليto me فَأَبدَتand revealed
واضِحَfair اللَونِthe complexion نَحيضاfull-fleshed
when she appeared to me and revealed
When she appeared before me and displayed
a fair-hued, full-fleshed form,
Clearly her rosy complexion
وَعِذابَand sweet الطَعمِthe taste غُرّاgleaming white
كَأَقاحيlike daisies الرَملِthe sand بيضاwhite
And sweet-tasting, gleaming teeth,
And the agony of her flavor was bitter
like white daisies in the sand.
Like the white sand dunes

وَثَنَتand she repeated رَجعاًa reply خَفيضاhushed
She sent us a secret message,
She secretly sent word to us
and repeated a hushed reply:
And quickly turned away furtive

نَلبَسَwe put on اللَيلَthe night العَريضاbroad
“Wait for me until
To meet with me until
we clothe ourselves in the broad night.”
The dark night dressed in its width

And it was as though honey and spiced wine
As if the honey and the sweet
and clear, fresh water
Were blended with the fresh water

بَعدَماafter ذُقتَyou tasted غُموضاsleep
had touched her canine teeth,
It started gnawing on it
after you had tasted sleep.
After you’d tasted bitterness
