رَثُّ حَبلُ الوَصلِ وَاِنصَرَما

مِن حَبيبٍ هاجَ لي سَقَما

مِن حَبيبٍ هاجَ لي سَقَما

The cord of union is frayed and has snapped

The bonds of love are worn and torn asunder,

with a beloved who stirred sickness in me.

By a beloved who brought me only pain.

كِدتُ أَقضي إِذ رَأَيتُ لَهُ

كِدتُ أَقضي إِذ رَأَيتُ لَهُ

مَنزِلاً بِالخَيفِ قَد طَسَما

مَنزِلاً بِالخَيفِ قَد طَسَما

I nearly died when I saw his

When I saw he had made his dwelling

dwelling at al-Khayf, already effaced.

In the valley of al-Khayf, I nearly died.

لا تَرى إِلّا الرَمادَ بِهِ

لا تَرى إِلّا الرَمادَ بِهِ

وَمَغاني القِدرِ وَالحُمَما

وَمَغاني القِدرِ وَالحُمَما

You see nothing there but ashes,

There you see only ashes remain

the cooking-pot sites and charcoal,

And cooking pots and embers.

وَمَخَطَّ النُؤيِ مَرَّ بِهِ

وَمَخَطَّ النُؤيِ مَرَّ بِهِ

مَدفَعٌ لِلسَيلِ فَاِنهَدَما

مَدفَعٌ لِلسَيلِ فَاِنهَدَما

and the outline of the tent trench, across which ran

The torrent's course was impeded

a floodwater channel, so the trench collapsed.

By a dam, now collapsed in disarray.
