مِنfrom حَبيبٍa beloved أَمسىhas become هَواناour love هَواهُhis love
Some of what had grieved it returned to the heart,
Some of what had wounded my heart
From a beloved whose love has become our own.
Of a lover who now disdains his passion
ياO لِقَوميto my people وَكَيفَand how صَبرِيَmy endurance عَمَّنapart from one who
لاnot تَرىsees النَفسُthe soul طيبَsweetness of عَيشٍlife سِواهُapart from him
O my people! How can I bear being apart from one
Oh my people, how can I have patience with one
Without whom the soul finds no sweetness in life?
Whose soul finds no comfort without him
أَرسَلَتshe sent word إِذwhen رَأَتshe saw بِعادِيَmy estrangement أَنthat لاnot

When she saw my estrangement, she sent word: 'Let him not
When she saw I was distant, she sent word that
Heed an instigator against me, should one come to him.
No talebearer will be welcomed if he comes to him
لاdo not تُطِعheed بيagainst me فَدَتكَmay it ransom you نَفسيmy soul عَدوّاًan enemy

Do not heed an enemy against me—may my soul ransom you—
Do not obey, may I ransom you, my soul's enemy
For a tale he has fabricated to suit his own desire.
In tales he fabricated to suit his whim
لاdo not تُطِعheed بيagainst me مَنone who لَوif رَآنيhe saw me وَإِيّاand [object-pronoun stem]
كَyou (pronoun ending) أَسيرَيtwo captives of ضَرورَةٍdire need ماnot عَناهُit concerned him
Do not heed against me one who, if he saw me and
Do not obey one who, were he to see me and you
You both captives of dire need, would not care.'
As two captives of dire need, would not reproach him
وَاِجتِنابيand my shunning بَيتَthe house of الحَبيبِthe beloved وَماand not الخُلimmortality (first part)
دُ(completes 'immortality') بِأَشهىmore desirable إِلَيَّto me مِنthan أَنto أَراهُI see him
And I shun the beloved's house, though immortality is not
And avoiding the house of the beloved, though nothing is sweeter
More desirable to me than seeing my beloved.
To me than to see him
ماwhy ضِراريmy harming نَفسيmyself بِهَجرَةِby forsaking مَنone who لَيis not (first part)
سَ(completes 'is not') مُسيئاًdoing wrong وَلاand not بَعيداًfar away ثَراهُhis soil
Why do I harm myself by forsaking one who is not
It does my soul no harm to shun one who is
A wrongdoer, and whose ground lies not far away,
Neither unjust nor far, though he spurns me
دونَwithout أَنthat يَسمَعَhe hears المَعاذِرَthe excuses مِنّيfrom me

Without the beloved hearing my excuses
Without hearing my excuses
Or appearing reproachful—for I can appease my beloved?
Or seeing him blame me, for I have his approval
