كِدتُI nearly يَومَon the day of الرَحيلِdeparture أَقضيI end حَياتيmy life
لَيتَنيwould that I مِتُّI had died قَبلَbefore يَومَthe day of الرَحيلِdeparture
On the day of departure, I nearly died.
I almost lost my life the day we parted
Would that I had died before the day of departure!
I wish I had died before the day we parted
لاnot أُطيقُI can bear الكَلامَspeech مِنfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of الوَجthe long- (start of 'longing')
دِ-ing (completing 'longing') وَدَمعيand my tears يَسيلُflow كُلَّevery مَسيلِchannel
I cannot speak, so intense is my long-
I cannot speak, such is my grief
ing; my tears flow down every channel.
My tears flow like streams
ذَرَفَتshed tears عَينُهاher eye فَفاضَتthen overflowed دُموعيmy tears
وَكِلاناand both of us يَلقَيmeets بِلُبٍّwith a heart أَصيلِstricken
Her eye shed tears, and my tears overflowed.
Her eyes shed tears, and so did mine
And we both meet, our hearts stricken.
Both of us have sincere hearts
لَوif خَلَتwas alone خُلَّتيmy beloved أَصَبتُI gained نَوالاًa favor
أَوor حَديثاًconversation يَشفىheals مَعَalong with التَنويلِthe granting of favors
Had my beloved been alone, I would have gained a favor,
Had my friends gathered, I'd have found solace
Or healing words, along with her favors.
Or a conversation to comfort my woes
وَلَقَدand indeed قالَتِshe said الحَبيبَةُthe beloved لَولاwere it not for
كَثرَةُthe multitude of الناسِpeople جُدتُI would give generously بِالتَقبيلِwith kissing
And the beloved indeed said, 'Were it not for
My beloved said, if not for the crowds
The crowd of people, I would freely give kisses.'
I would have greeted you with a kiss
لَيسَis not طَعمُthe taste of الكافورِcamphor وَالمِسكِand musk شيباًmixed together
ثُمَّthen عُلّاboth were infused بِالراحِwith wine وَالزَنجَبيلِand ginger
The taste of camphor and musk, mixed together,
Camphor and musk are not only for elders
Then infused with wine and ginger,
Add some basil and ginger too
حينَwhen تَنتابُهاyou visit her بِأَطيَبِsweeter مِنthan فيmouth
هاher طُروقاًby night إِنif شِئتَyou wish أَوor بِالمَقيلِat the midday rest
Is no sweeter, when you visit her, than the mouth
When she is in a good mood
Of hers—by night, if you wish, or at midday.
Serve her pancakes or grilled meat
ذاكَthat ظَنّيmy surmise وَلَمand did not أَذُقI taste طَعمَthe taste of فيهاher mouth
لاno وَماby what فيin الكِتابِthe Book مِنof تَنزيلِrevelation
That is my surmise; I have not tasted her mouth—
That's what I think, though I haven't tasted her
No, by the revelation in the Book!
Not even in holy scripts is this revealed
وَبِفَرعٍand by a head of hair حُدِّثتُهُI was told of it كَالمَثانيlike twisted cords
عُلَّwas perfumed بِالمِسكِwith musk فَهوَso it is مِثلَlike السَديلِthe hanging curtain
And by her hair, which I was told is like twisted cords,
I told a branch, rub musk on yourself
Perfumed with musk, it is like a hanging curtain.
You'll be like a gently flowing brook
رَبعَةٌof medium height أَوor فُوَيقَa little above ذاكَthat قَليلاًslightly

She is of middling height, or a little taller,
Stay a while, even if it's just a quarter
And a late-morning sleeper, truly languid.
We'll sleep till late morning, as laziness permits
لاnot يَزالُceases الخَلخالُthe anklet فَوقَabove الحَشاياthe cushions
مِثلَlike أَثناءِthe coils of حَيَّةٍa snake مَقتولِslain
The anklet remains upon the cushions,
Her anklet remains above her slipper
Like the coils of a slain snake.
Like a slaughtered snake in its coils
زانَadorned ماwhat تَحتَbeneath كَعبِهاher ankle قَدَماهاher two feet
حينَwhen تَمشيshe walks وَالكَعبُand the ankle غَيرُnot نَبيلِbulky
Her feet grace what lies beneath her ankle,
Under her anklet, her feet
As she walks, her ankle not bulky.
Move as she walks with grace
