ياO مَنwho لِقَلبٍfor a heart مُتَيَّمٍenslaved by love كَلِفٍconsumed with passion
يَهذيraves بِخَودٍabout a tender maiden مَريضَةِlanguid النَظَرِin gaze
Oh, who will help a heart enslaved by love, consumed with passion,
O you whose anguished heart is burdened with grief
Raving about a tender maiden with a languid gaze?
And raves deliriously with ailing gaze,
تَمشيshe walks الهُوَيناgently إِذاwhen مَشَتshe walks فُضُلاًin a single garment
وَهيَand she كَمِثلِlike العُسلوجِthe tender shoot فيamong الشَجَرِthe trees
She walks softly when she walks in a single garment,
She walks gently like honey dripping from the tree,
And she is like a tender shoot among the trees.
We neither coveted her, nor did she expect us,
ماnot إِنemphasizing the negation طَمِعناwe hoped بِهاfor her وَلاand not طَمِعَتshe hoped
حَتّىuntil اِلتَقَيناwe met لَيلاًat night عَلىby قَدَرِfate
We had not hoped for her, nor had she hoped for us,
Until we met by chance one night.
Until we met one night as fate decreed.
My eyes grew confused as I looked at her,
ماnot زالَceased طَرفيmy gaze يَحارُis bewildered إِذwhen نَظَرَتshe looked
حَتّىuntil رَأَيتُI saw النُقصانَthe diminution فيin بَصَريmy sight
My gaze remained bewildered when she looked,
Until I saw my vision had diminished,
Until I noticed a failing in my sight.
One night I saw her and forgot her,
أَبصَرتُهاI saw her لَيلَةًone night وَنِسوَتِهاand her women
يَمشينَthey walk بَينَbetween المَقامِthe Station وَالحَجَرِand the Stone
I saw her one night with her women,
Walking lightly between staying and leaving.
Walking between the Maqam and the Stone.
White, beautiful, tender buds she walked gently like cows,
يَمشينَthey walk هَوناًgently كَمِشيَةِlike the gait البَقَرِof cattle
Fair, lovely, bashful maidens, short-stepping,
Endowed with beauty and grace together,
They walk gently, with the gait of cattle.
And endowed with messengers of coyness and vigilance,
قَدindeed فُزنَthey won بِالحُسنِin loveliness وَالجَمالِand beauty مَعاًtogether
وَفُزنَand they won رِسلاًwith ease بِالدَلِّin coquettish grace وَالخَفَرِand modesty
They have won loveliness and beauty alike,
They listen to her when she speaks,
And won, with ease, coquettish grace and modesty.
To prefer her over all mankind,
يُنصِتنَthey listen silently يَوماًone day لَهاto her إِذاwhen نَطَقَتshe speaks
كَيماso that يُفَضِّلنَهاthey may rank her higher عَلىabove البَشَرِhumankind
One day they listen silently to her when she speaks,
She said to a girlfriend confiding in her,
So as to rank her above humankind.
“You will spoil pilgrimage all your life.”
قالَتshe said لِتِربٍto an age-mate لَهاof hers تُحَدِّثُهاspeaking to her
لَتُفسِدِنَّyou shall surely spoil الطَوافَthe circumambulation فيfor عُمَرِUmar
She said to a companion her own age, speaking to her:
“Get up and confront him so he may see us,
"You shall surely spoil Umar's circumambulation.
Then wink at him, O sister, in vigilance.”
قوميrise تَصَدَّيpresent yourself لَهُto him لِيُبصِرَناso that he may see us
ثُمَّthen اِغمُزيهِwink at him ياO أُختُsister فيin خَفَرِmodesty
Rise, put yourself before him, so he may see us;
She said, “I have winked at him but he refused,
Then wink at him, sister, bashfully."
Then I walked briskly following you.”
قالَتshe said لَهاto her قَدalready غَمَزتُهُI winked at him فَأَبىbut he refused
ثُمَّthen اِسبَطَرَّتshe strode forth تَسعىhurrying عَلىalong أَثَريmy trail
She said to her, "I have already winked at him, but he refused."
Whoever is satiated with her saliva after sleep,
Then she strode forth, hurrying in my wake.
Is satiated with musk and cool waist.

Whoever is given her saliva to drink after sleep
She is a bashful, lovely, difficult maiden,
Is given musk and a cool, chilled draught.
At the prime of her beauty.

With striking dark-and-white eyes, round-limbed and beloved,
Hard to match at a gathering.
