ياO مَنwho لِقَلبٍfor a heart دَنِفٍlanguishing مُغرَمِlove-stricken
هامَwas mad with love إِلىfor هِندٍHind وَلَمand did not يَظلِمِdo wrong
Oh, who will aid a heart, languishing and love-stricken?
O you whose ardent heart is enamored
It was mad with love for Hind, and did no wrong.
Of one who went to India and was not unfair
هامَwas mad with love إِلىfor رِئمٍa white gazelle هَضيمِslender الحَشاthe waist
عَذبِsweet الثَناياthe front teeth طَيِّبِdelightful المَبسِمِthe smiling mouth
It was mad with love for a slender-waisted white gazelle,
Who went to a gazelle, slender and delicate
With sweet front teeth and a delightful smiling mouth,
Sweet of smile, pure of heart
كَالشَمسِlike the sun بِالأَسعُدِat al-Asʿud إِذwhen أَشرَقَتit shone
فيon يَومِa day دَجنٍovercast gloom بارِدٍcold مُقتِمِdark
Like the sun at al-Asʿud when it shone
Like the sun in the Asad when it rose
On a cold, dark, overcast day.
On a cold, gloomy day
لَمdid not أَحسَبِI think الشَمسَthe sun بِلَيلٍat night بَدَتappeared

I did not think the sun had appeared at night
I did not think the sun appeared at night
Before me, to anyone of flesh or blood.
Before me, neither flesh nor blood
قالَتshe said وَقَدwhile already جَدَّgrew urgent رَحيلٌdeparture بِهاfor her
وَالعَينُand the eye إِنwhenever تَطرِفshe blinks بِهاwith it تَسجُمِstreams with tears
She said, as her departure grew urgent,
She said, and departure had saddened her
And her eye streamed with tears whenever she blinked:
And if the eye glanced at it, it would weep
إِنif يَنسَناforgets us المَوتُdeath وَيُؤذَنand leave is granted لَناto us
نَلقَكَwe shall meet you إِنif عُمِّرتَyou are kept alive بِالمَوسِمِat the pilgrimage season
"If death forgets us and we are given leave,
If death makes us forget and allows us
We shall meet you, if you live on, at the pilgrimage season—
To meet you again in season
إِنif لَمnot تَحُلyou change أَوor تَكُyou are ذاpossessing مَيلَةٍa fickle inclination
يَصرُفُكَturns you away الأَدنىthe nearer one عَنِfrom الأَقدَمِthe older one
If you have not changed or grown so fickle
If you do not come or if you remain indifferent
That the nearer love turns you from the older."
The least will distract you from the greatest
قُلتُI said لَهاto her بَلno, rather أَنتِyou مُعتَلَةٌmaking excuses
فيconcerning الوَصلِthe love-bond ياO هِندُHind لِكَيso that تَصرُميyou break off relations
I said to her, "No, you are making excuses
I said to her, "No, you are ailing, Hind
About our union, O Hind, so you may break it off."
In love, that you may pine away"
