أَيُهاO you العاتِبُthe reproacher الَّذيwho رامَsought هَجريforsaking me
وَبِعاديand keeping away from me وَماand not عَلِمتُI knew بِذاكاof that
O you who reproach me, who sought to forsake me
O you who reproached me and sought to abandon me
And keep away from me, though I knew nothing of that.
And keep away from me, though I knew not why
قُلتَyou said أَنتَyou المَلولُthe easily wearied one فيfor غَيرِno شَيءٍreason
بِئسَhow bad ماwhat قُلتَyou said لَيسَis not ذاكَthat كَذاكاlike that
You said, 'You grow weary for no reason.'
You said I was discontent for no reason
How ill you spoke! That is not so.
How wrong you were! It is not so
زَعَمواthey claimed أَنَّنيthat I am بِغيرِكِfor someone other than you صَبٌlovesick
جَعَلَmay make اللَهُGod مِنwhomever أُحِبُّI love فِداكاyour ransom
They claimed I was lovesick for someone other than you.
They claimed that I love another besides you
May God make whomever I love your ransom.
God forbid! None but you do I love
فَلَوَfor if أَنَّthat الَّذيthe one whom عَتَبتَyou reproached عَلَيهِagainst him
خَيِّرُwere given a choice of الناسِpeople واحِداًone person ماnot عَداكاhe would pass you by
For if the one you reproached
If the one you reproached were given the choice
Were given his choice of one among people, he would not pass you by.
Of all mankind, he would choose none but you
وَلَوِand if اِسطاعَhe could أَنto يَقيكَshield you المَناياdeath
غَيرَwithout غَبنٍloss بِنَفسِهِwith his own life لَوَقاكاhe would surely shield you
And if he could shield you from death,
And if he could protect you from death's grasp
He would shield you with his own life, counting it no loss.
He would shield you without loss to himself
وَلَوَand if أَقسَمتَyou swore لاnot يُكَلِّمُhe speaks حَتّىuntil
عُمرِthe lifespan of نوحٍNoah بِعَيشِهِby his life ماnot عَصاكاhe would disobey you
And if you swore he must not speak until
And if you swore not to speak to me until
Noah's lifespan had passed—by his life, he would not disobey you.
The age of Noah in his long life, I would not disobey you
وَاِرضَand be pleased عَنّيwith me جُعِلتُmay I be made أَفديكَI ransom you إِنّيindeed I
وَالعَزيزِby the Mighty الجَليلِthe Majestic أَهوىI long for رِضاكاyour approval
And be pleased with me—may I be your ransom! Indeed I,
So be pleased with me, for I ransom myself to you
By the Mighty, the Majestic, long for your approval.
By the Almighty, the Majestic - I yearn for your acceptance
