O you who reproach me for loving her,

    You go unheeded, O reproacher.

You are free of the anguish of loving her,

And love of her is a sickness deep within me.

Indeed, what I have suffered from loving her

No one, barefoot or shod, has endured.

Death is better than a life like this:

I am neither united with her nor forgetful of her.

When someone came to tell me what

I loathe among the tidings an inquirer is told,

I said, while my eye shed its tears,

Like pearls, streaming from its corners:

Oh, if only I had died, and love had died,

And one seeking union had died before the meeting!

O dwelling, whose traces have been effaced,

Desolate and barren, with no one living there:

The wind has dragged its train through it,

And the downpour has coursed through its ruins.
