ياO سُكنَSukn قَدindeed وَاللَهِby God رَبِّLord of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
أَقصَدتِyou mortally struck قَلبِيmy heart بِالدَلالِwith coquetry فَعَوِّضيso make amends
O Sukn, indeed, by God, Muhammad's Lord,
O dwelling, by Allah Lord of Muhammad
You have mortally struck my heart with coquetry; make amends.
You have captivated my heart with charm, so compensate me
وَتَحَرَّجيand refrain scrupulously مِنfrom قَتلِkilling مَنone who لَمdid not يَبغِكُمwish you
هَجراًestrangement وَلاand not صَرماseverance وَلَمand did not يَتَبَغَّضِmake himself hateful
And refrain from killing one who never wished you
And feel ashamed of killing one who did not wrong you
Estrangement or severance, nor made himself hateful.
With estrangement or enmity, and did not spurn you
ياO سُكنَSukn لَستُI am not وَإِنand even if نَأَتhas grown distant بِكِwith you دارُكُمyour home
بِالسالِforgetful عَنكِof you وَلاand not المَلولِthe easily wearied المُعرِضِthe one turning away
O Sukn, though your home has carried you far away, I am not
O dwelling, though I come to your abode
One who has forgotten you, nor grown weary and turned away.
Not to ask after you or spurn you in disdain
ياO سُكنَSukn كَمhow many مِمَنof those who تَوَدَّدَsought affection عِندَناwith us
I keep at a distance وَكَمand how many مِنof كاشِحٍa concealed enemy مُتَعَرِّضِintrusive
O Sukn, how many who sought our affection
O dwelling, how many were brought near us then spurned
I keep at a distance—and how many an intrusive foe!
And how many ardent suitors were made to withdraw
وَصَرَمتُand I severed ties فيكِfor your sake أَقارِبيmy relatives وَعواذِليand my reproachers
وَوَصَلتُand I joined عَمداًdeliberately فيكِfor your sake حَبلَthe cord of المُبغِضِone who hates
And for your sake I severed ties with my kin and my reproachers,
For you I have estranged my kin and lady friends
And deliberately joined, for your sake, the cord of a foe.
And for you I have deliberately joined ties with those who hate me
وَحَفِظتُand I safeguarded فيكِfor your sake أَمانَةًa trust حُمَّلتُهاI was entrusted with it
وَعَصيتُand I disobeyed كُلَّevery مُحَرِّشٍinciter of discord وَمُعَرِّضٍand insinuator
And for your sake I guarded a trust entrusted to me,
For you I have kept a trust I was charged with
And defied every inciter and insinuator.
And disobeyed every inciter and spurner
ياO سُكنَSukn حُبُّكِlove for you إِذsince كَلِفتُI became enamored بِحُبِّكُمwith love for you
غَرَضاًwith longing أَراهُI see it وَرَبِّby the Lord of مَكَّةَMecca مُمرِضيwhat makes me ill
O Sukn, my love for you, since I became enamored of you—
O dwelling, loving you when I was charged with loving you
In longing, I see it—by Mecca's Lord—as what sickens me.
Is a purpose I see, by the Lord of Mecca, enduring
ياO سُكنَSukn كانَwas العَهدُthe covenant فيماin what بَينَناwas between us
وَيَمينُand an oath صَبرٍbinding مِنكِfrom you أَنthat لاnot تَنقُضيyou would break
O Sukn, this was the covenant between us,
O dwelling, the pact between us was
And your binding oath: that you would not break
A vow of patience from you that you would not break
مِنّاwith us العُهودَthe pledges وَلاand not يَكونَbecome وِصالُكُمyour union
مَذقَwatering down الحَديثِspeech بِلَطِّby withholding دَينِthe debt owed to المُفرِضِthe lender
The pledges with us, nor let your union be
Not to break pacts, and that being joined with you
Watered-down talk, withholding the lender's due.
Would not be the taste of casual faith of the duty-bound
فَلَبِستُso I wore ذَلِكَthat مِنكِfrom you بَعدَafter جَديدِهِits newness
ظُلماًan injustice لَعَمريby my life كَاللِباسِlike a garment العَرمَضِthreadbare
So I wore that from you, after its newness had faded,
Yet after renewing it, you put that on me from you
An injustice, by my life, like a threadbare garment.
Unjustly, by my life, like a worn-out garment
وَوَجَدتِand you found حَبلَكِyour cord مِنamong حِبالِthe cords of مُحافِظٍone who keeps faith
سُجُعِeven الخَلائِقِin disposition فيin الوِصالِunion مُعَرِّضِforthcoming
And you found your cord among the cords of one who keeps faith,
And I found your tie to be among the ties of a keeper
Even in disposition, forthcoming in union.
To whom all creatures are exposed in being joined
