O my two friends, bring my riding camels near for me,

and tomorrow conceal that from my companions.

And convey my greeting to the campsite's trace

that lies in Mina beside al-Hisab.

And know, you two, that I am afflicted with an ailment

lodged within the ribs, this side of the inner veil.

Then she knowingly and deliberately turned her face away—

    Zaynab, Umm al-Hubab—as fate decreed.

My two companions saw that and spoke

words that failed, that were no answer of mine.

Indeed, my heart, endowed with reason, as

may plainly be seen by the eye, is stricken.

So I refuted what they said in ignorance

    with words I uttered aright:

If you two have concealed my ailment today,

then leave me; what ails me is enough for me.

Only, I wished that some torment

from my own were poured upon you both one day,

so you would taste some of what I tasted from her,

or toil for a while as I toil.

You will not attain that union with her

unless you reach the sky by ropes.
