ياO صاحِبَيَّmy two companions تَصَدَّعَتhas split apart كِبديmy liver
أَشكوI lament الغَداةَthis morning إِلَيكُماto you both وَجديmy anguished longing
O my two companions, my liver has split apart.
O my friends, my liver is cracked
This morning I lament to you both my anguish
I complain to you both, my fervor
مِنfrom حُبِّlove of جارِيَةٍa young woman كَلِفتُI became infatuated بِهاwith her
حَلَّتshe settled بِمَكَّةَin Mecca فيamong بَنيthe sons of سَعدِSa'd
From love of a young woman with whom I have become infatuated.
Of love for a maid I was burdened with
She settled in Mecca among the Banu Sa'd.
She stayed in Mecca, among the tribe of Saad
حَلَّتshe settled بِمَكَّةَin Mecca وَالنَوىand the distance قُذُفٌfar-reaching
هَيهاتَfar away مَكَّةُMecca مِنfrom قُرىthe villages of لُدِّLudd
She settled in Mecca, and the distance is great.
She stayed in Mecca, while the purpose was discarded
Far, far is Mecca from the villages of Ludd!
Alas, Mecca, away from the homelands
لاnot دارُهاher home داريmy home فَتُسعِفَنيso she might aid me
هَذاthis لَعَمرُكَby your life مِنfrom شَقاthe wretchedness of جَدّيmy fortune
Her home is not my home, so she cannot come to my aid.
Neither her home is my home, to give me relief
This, by your life, is due to my ill fortune.
By your life, this is the most wretched fervor of mine
وَاللَهِby God لاnot أَنسىI forget مَقالَتَهاher words
حَتّىuntil أُضَمَّنَI am enclosed مَيِّتاًdead لَحديmy grave
By God, I shall not forget her words
By Allah, I won’t forget her words
Until I am laid, dead, within my grave,
Until I'm laid to rest in my grave
وَوَداعُهاand her farewell يَومَthe day of الرَحيلِdeparture وَقَدwhen already
زُمَّwere bridled المَطيُّthe riding camels لِبَينِهِمfor their departure تَخديstriding swiftly
Nor her farewell on the day of departure, when already
And her farewell the day we departed
The riding camels were bridled for their departure, striding swiftly.
As the riding animal was ready between us
وَالعَينُand the eye واكِفَةٌstreaming tears وَقَدand already خَضِلَتhad grown wet
مِمّاfrom what تُفيضُit pours forth عَوارِضُthe sides of الخَدِّthe cheek
And the eye streamed tears; already wet were
While my eyes were sleepless and had become
The sides of the cheek with what it shed.
Discolored from the tears flowing down my cheek
اِذهَبgo فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom غَيرَwithout مُبتَعِدٍgoing far away
لاmay not كانَbe هَذاthis آخِرَthe last العَهدِmeeting
“Go—may I be your ransom—but do not go far;
Go, may I ransom you, not distancing
May this not be our last meeting.”
For this was not the last covenant
