أَيُّهاO القَلبُheart ماnot أَراكَI see you تَفيقُyou regain your senses
أَيُّها القَلبُ ما أَراكَ تَفيقُ
طالَhas lasted long ماthat قَدindeed تَعَلَّقَتكَhas clung to you العَلوقُthe clinging affliction
طالَ ما قَد تَعَلَّقَتكَ العَلوقُ
O heart, I do not see you coming to your senses.
O heart, why do I see you awaken?
Long has the clinging affliction held you.
Long has attachment ensnared you,
هَلis there لَكَfor you اليَومَtoday إِنif نَأَتhas gone far away أُمُّmother of بَكرٍBakr
هَل لَكَ اليَومَ إِن نَأَت أُمُّ بَكرٍ
وَتَوَلَّتand turned away إِلىto عَزاءٍconsolation طَريقُa path
وَتَوَلَّت إِلى عَزاءٍ طَريقُ
Have you today, if Umm Bakr has gone far away
If today the mother of Bakr comes
and turned away, any path to consolation?
And takes to solace the road,
مَنwhoever يَكُنmay be مِنto هَوىlove حَبيبٍa beloved قَريباًclose
مَن يَكُن مِن هَوى حَبيبٍ قَريباً
فَأَناas for me النازِحُthe far-removed one البَعيدُthe distant one السَحيقُthe very remote one
فَأَنا النازِحُ البَعيدُ السَحيقُ
Whoever may be close to a beloved's love,
Who is near to the love of a beloved,
I am far removed, distant, remote.
Then I am the distant, far-off outcast,
قُدِّرَwas decreed الحُبُّlove بَينَناbetween us فَاِلتَقَيناand so we met
قُدِّرَ الحُبُّ بَينَنا فَاِلتَقَينا
وَكِلاناand both of us إِلىfor اللِقاءِthe meeting مَشوقُfilled with longing
وَكِلانا إِلى اللِقاءِ مَشوقُ
Love was decreed between us, and so we met,
Love between us was predestined, so we met
and both of us longed for the meeting.
And both of us were eager for the meeting,
فَاِلتَقَيناso we met وَلَمand did not نَخَفfear ماwhat لَقيناwe encountered
فَاِلتَقَينا وَلَم نَخَف ما لَقينا
لَيلَةَthe night of الخَيفِal-Khayf وَالمُنىand desires قَدindeed تَسوقُdrive onward
لَيلَةَ الخَيفِ وَالمُنى قَد تَسوقُ
So we met, and did not fear what befell us,
We met and did not conceal what we encountered
on the night at al-Khayf, while desires were driving us on.
The night of fear and of purpose that leads,
وَجَرىand passed بَينَناbetween us فَجَدَّدَand so renewed وَصلاًa bond
وَجَرى بَينَنا فَجَدَّدَ وَصلاً
حوَّلٌresourceful قُلَّبُnimble اللِسانِof tongue رَفيقُgentle
حوَّلٌ قُلَّبُ اللِسانِ رَفيقُ
And between us passed, renewing our bond,
And between us occurred, renewing a bond,
a resourceful man, nimble-tongued and gentle.
A fickle one, inconstant of tongue, a comrade,
لاdo not تَظُنّيyou think أَنَّthat التَراسُلَexchanging messages وَالبَذand generosity (word continues)
لا تَظُنّي أَنَّ التَراسُلَ وَالبَذ
لَcompletion of 'generosity' بِكُلِّfor every النِساءِwoman عِنديin my view يَليقُis fitting
لَ بِكُلِّ النِساءِ عِندي يَليقُ
Do not think that exchanging messages and generosity
Think not that correspondence and gift-giving
are fitting, in my view, for every woman.
Are proper from me for all women,
إِنَّindeed مِنهُنَّamong them لِلكَرامَةِfor honor أَهلاًworthy
إِنَّ مِنهُنَّ لِلكَرامَةِ أَهلاً
وَالَّذيand that which بَينَهُنَّbetween them بَونٌa gulf سَحيقُimmense
وَالَّذي بَينَهُنَّ بَونٌ سَحيقُ
Some of them are indeed worthy of honor,
Some of them are indeed worthy of honor,
and the gulf between them is immense.
And between them and me is a far span.
