    نُحَيِّ الرُسومَ وَنُؤيَ الطَلَل

    My two friends, turn aside with us for a while;

    Let us greet the traces and the ruined camp's trench,

    And weep—but can weeping ever bring back

    To us a time of ours that has passed away?

    The nights when Suʿdā was our beloved,

    Maintaining, for love of us, ties with those we befriended.

    And she shines like a raincloud whose

    Cloud-banks clothe the valley floors in clover.

    When she walked among her peers,

    Like young wild cattle treading the mud—

    As though the rain-streams of a summer-watered tract

    Were home to every wild beast roaming free—

    Unveiled, already adorned with blended perfume

    And musk, making the most of dusk,

    Then they surprised me, though I was not off guard,

    Aching with need after the first draught.

    وَعَزَّ الفِراقُ عَلَينا وَجَل

    So I greeted them, and they greeted me;

    And parting was hard on us, and grievous.
