خَليلَيَّmy two friends عوجاturn aside, you two نَبكِlet us weep شَجواًin sorrow عَلىover الرَسمِthe campsite's traces
عَفاhas faded بَينَbetween وادٍa valley لِلعَشيرَةِof al-Ashirah فَالحَزمِand al-Hazm
My two friends, turn aside; let us weep in sorrow over the campsite's traces,
Now faded between the valley of al-Ashirah and al-Hazm.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends ماnot كانَتhad been تَصادُhunted مَقاتِليmy vital spots
وَلاnor غُرَّتيmy unguardedness حَتّىuntil وَقَعتُI chanced عَلىupon نُعمِNu'm
My two friends, my vital spots had never fallen prey,
Nor my unguarded moments, until I encountered Nu'm.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends حَتّىuntil لُفَwas entwined حَبليmy cord بِخادِعٍwith a deceiver
مُوَقّىًprotected إِذاwhen يُرمىis shot at صَيودٍa skilled hunter إِذاwhen يَرميshoots
My two friends, until my cord was entwined with a deceiver,
Shielded when shot at, a sure hunter when shooting.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends إِنif باعَدتُI keep away لانَتshe softens وَإِنand if أَلِنI soften
تُباعِدshe draws away فَماso not تُرجىis hoped for لِحَربٍfor war وَلاnor سِلمِpeace
My two friends, if I draw away, she softens; and if I soften,
She draws away; neither war nor peace can be hoped for with her.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends إِنَّindeed الحُبَّlove أَحسِبُI think قاتِليmy killer
فَقاضٍthus putting an end عَلىto نَفسيmy life كَماjust as قَدalready بَرىwore away عَظميmy bones
My two friends, love, I think, will surely kill me,
And so end my life, as it has already worn away my bones.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends مَنwhoever يَكلَفbecomes enamored بِآخَرَof another كَالَّذيlike the one
كَلِفتُI became enamored بِهِof him يَدمُلheals over فُؤاداًa heart عَلىover سُقمِsickness
My two friends, whoever becomes enamored of another like the one
I love heals a heart with sickness still within.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends بَعضَsome of اللَومِthe reproach لاdo not تَرحَلاyou two burden بِهِwith it
رَفيقَكُماthe companion of you both حَتّىuntil تَقولاyou two speak عَلىwith عِلمِknowledge
My two friends, less reproach! Do not use it to burden
Your companion until you speak with knowledge.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends ماno حُبٌّlove كَحُبٍّlike a love أُحِبُّهُI love it
وَلاnor داءُillness ذيof one with حُبٍّlove كَدائِيlike my illness وَلاnor هَمّيmy anguish
My two friends, no love is like the love I bear,
Nor any lover's illness like mine, nor any anguish like mine.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends قَدalready أَعياhas proved impossible العَزاءُconsolation فَخَفَّفاso ease up, you two
وَلاand do not تُبدِياyou two reveal لَوميblame of me فَيُنبيكُماfor it tells you both جِسميmy body
My two friends, solace is beyond me; so be gentle,
And do not voice your blame of me, for my body will tell you both.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends مُنّاshow kindness, you two لاdo not تَكوناyou two be مَعَwith العِدىthe enemies
وَماand not اللَومُreproach بِالمُسليat all consoling فُؤاديmy heart مِنَfrom الغَمِّgrief
My two friends, be gracious; do not side with the enemies,
And reproach does not relieve my heart of grief.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends لَوif يَرقىis treated with charms خَليلٌa lover مِنَfrom الهَوىpassion
رَقيتُI would be charmed بِماwith what يُدنيbrings near النَوارَthe skittish ones مِنَamong العُصمِthe white-footed mountain goats
My two friends, if a lover could be charmed free of passion,
I would be charmed with what draws the skittish white-footed mountain goats near.
