My maidservant says, on seeing me

stirred with longing, though I had desisted for a while:

“I see you have awakened a new longing today,

And passion has stirred a buried ailment in you.

Yet you had claimed that you were steadfast:

Whenever you wished, you could part with your companion.

By your Lord, has a messenger of hers come to you

And made you yearn, or have you met a confidant of hers?”

So I said: “A brother in love complained to me,

Like us in some bygone days, as you know.

He recounted to me what he suffers because of Hind,

And brought it back to mind after we had forgotten.

And one with an old longing, even if he consoles himself,

Is stirred to longing when he meets lovers.

And many a beloved have I turned away from,

Not from aversion, though I was loath to lose her.

I wanted to part from her and endured being without her,

Even if my heart went utterly mad for her.”
