My friend said, as her laden camels passed,
My beloved said as their caravan passed
departing from Shawtan, 'Prevail through patience.'
Emerging from Shautan with patience, so triumph!

So I said to him, there is no consolation or grief

With a heart appeased from its passion, so stop!

And no meeting can be hoped for after this
between us and them before the gathering at al-Mujammar.
For us and them, without the gathering of ashes

Or else leave me be from blame, and excuse me

Torments: no physician can heal what ails him,
Medicines that do not heal the one who has it
nor does the glad-tidings bearer's remedy help him.
And the consoler’s remedies do not provide relief

Two states: at one time his visitor despairs,
While at times in despair of one returning to health
at another he seems to the eye like one bewildered.
And at times seen in the eye like one perplexed

Stricken with passion, brought down by a tall one
slender-waisted, beautiful where her body is bared,
Brokenhearted, beautiful, grieving

slow-stepping, fond of curtained chambers, innocent,
Bunches picked for the bracelets, a coquette
soft-fleshed beneath the knot of her waist-wrap.
And plenty beneath the belief of the devout

Her charm in elegance in plaited tresses
luxuriant as a palm's rounded fruit-cluster,
Furnished like the bent palm trunk

with fine serrations, like daisies in bloom.

by flowing waters from a brimming, still pool.
Streams from a gathered, bewildered cloud

One of the fair women, languid at midmorning, stately in her gait,
Of white soft with the languor of morning, a hoopoe
heavy in movement; whenever she rises for anything, she flags.
Heavy, when it rises to something it weakens

So when I recognized the separation from her and met it
a creature had crossed rightward for the omen-reading augur—
A fleeing gazelle sped to the startled bird

I complained to Bakr while between us
a towering mountain that wearies any gaze fixed upon it.
An obstacle, when the glance turns to it, it saddens

So I said, give your opinion, he said, decide yourself
yet they are not too far ahead: command whatever you wish.'
You are hopeless, and they have not outgrown, so do as you wish

At them is healing for an aching heart

A need for us, then catch up and don't delay

and if riders meet us, do not be bewildered.
And if we meet the riders do not wander

And the palace beneath Azwor

We are seen, eyes will recognize us, so we'll be infamous

We stayed near the tamarisks, the morning breeze stroked us
and our mounts remained without shelter.
And our mounts remained without being saddled

When we finished the journey from Rabigh valley
her fire appeared a moon to one seeking firelight.
Their fire appeared to the enlightened like the moon
