Indeed, what troubled my heart, coming from her,

when we arranged to meet at the dune,

    was her speech—the loveliest thing—

which had entwined a lover with you:

her words to me, as she shed

tears from her eyes in torrents:

“Indeed, toward this man we were

    the most sincere-hearted of people.

And we favored him with affection

that was never tainted on our part.

Yet he repaid us, when we praised

his affection for me, by going away.

And today he clothed us in shame

and disgrace, when we spent the night.”

Her distance is sickness, and I yearn

    when she walks nearby.

Would that this night were a month,

in which we see no stranger:

    moonlit, keeping away from us

those we wished to be absent.

    No one but me and

her, and we fear no watcher.

She sat in a worthy place,

    combining beauty and fragrance,

    soft in its seating and

    footing, moist and fertile.

    The Pleiades poured into it

a downpour from the Bucket’s heights,

    ample, bringing forth crops,

    and, with the crops, abundance.
