    قَد أَجمَعوا مِن بَينِهِم أَفَدا

    Indeed, the companions will bid you farewell tomorrow;

    they have resolved to hasten their departure.

    And I see you, should their dwelling grow distant,

    surely perishing of grief in their wake.

    Never before them have you loved like this

    anyone with whom intimacy is renewed.

    She said to a maidservant who was conversing with her,

    and what she had said melted the liver:

    “Ill fate drove him to Damascus, though

    Damascus was never a home for our people—

    only the burdens of misery because of one

    whose dwelling did not lie close to us,

    a wanderer, easily bored, fond of novelty,

    who never stays true to one who offers love.”

    She said: “For that you have been repaid; acknowledge it,

    since you send the couriers with his letters.

    صَبراً لِما قَد جِئتِ مُعتَمِدا

    So now taste the recompense you received for it;

    be patient with what you have deliberately done.

    Indeed, the Sovereign, by His power, would not allow

    you to know what you will earn tomorrow.”
