أَحِنُّI yearn إِذاwhen رَأَيتُI see جَمالَbeauty سُعدىSu'da
وَأَبكيand I weep إِنif رَأَيتُI see لَهاfor her قَريناa companion
I yearn when I see Su'da's beauty,
I yearn when I see the beauty of Su'ad
And I weep if I see her with a companion.
And I weep if I see her with a companion
وَقَدand already أَفِدَhas drawn near الرَحيلُdeparture فَقُلso say لِسُعدىto Su'da
لَعَمرُكِby your life خَبِّريtell ماwhat تَأمُريناyou bid us
And departure has drawn near, so say to Su'da:
And travel has availed, so say to Su'ad
By your life, tell us what you bid us do.
By your life, tell me what you command us
أَلاah ياO لَيلُLayla (poetically shortened) إِنَّindeed شِفاءَcure نَفسيmy soul
نَوالُكِyour favor إِنif بَخِلتِyou are stingy فَزَوِّديناthen provision us
Ah, O Layla, surely the cure for my soul
Oh night, the cure of my soul indeed
Is your favor; if you are stingy, then give us provisions.
Is your gift, so if you're stingy, provide for us
