دَعانيsummoned me إِلىto أَسماءَAsma عَنwithout غَيرِany مَوعِدٍarranged meeting
دَعاني إِلى أَسماءَ عَن غَيرِ مَوعِدٍ
صُروفُvicissitudes مَناياfates كانَwas وَقفاًheld in suspense حِمامُهاtheir doom
صُروفُ مَنايا كانَ وَقفاً حِمامُها
I was summoned to Asma without a meeting arranged,
She called me to Asma without prior notice
By turns of fate whose doom was held in suspense.
The turns of fate paused her pigeons mid-flight
فَلَمّاthen when اِلتَقَيناwe met شَفَّshowed through بُردٌa cloak مُحَقَّقٌpatterned
فَلَمّا اِلتَقَينا شَفَّ بُردٌ مُحَقَّقٌ
عَنِfrom الشَمسِthe sun جَلّىunveiled يَومَa day دَجنٍgloom غَمامُهاits clouds
عَنِ الشَمسِ جَلّى يَومَ دَجنٍ غَمامُها
When we met, a patterned cloak revealed
When we met, a definite coolness was felt
A sun whose clouds had parted on a day of gloom.
Dispelling the sun on a gloomy day
وَقُلنَand they said لَهاto her وَالعَينُand the watching eyes حَولَكِaround you جَمَّةٌnumerous
وَقُلنَ لَها وَالعَينُ حَولَكِ جَمَّةٌ
وَمِثلُكِand one like you بادٍconspicuous مُستَشارٌinquired about مَقامُهاher whereabouts
وَمِثلُكِ بادٍ مُستَشارٌ مَقامُها
And they said to her: Many eyes surround you,
We told her, with eyes all around you
And one like you is conspicuous, her whereabouts sought out.
One like you, whose place is consulted
أَيَخفىcan it be hidden? لَناfor us وَلِلمُغيريِّand for al-Mughiri مَجلِسٌa meeting-place
أَيَخفى لَنا وَلِلمُغيريِّ مَجلِسٌ
فَإِنَّfor indeed النَوىseparation كانَتwas قَليلاًlittle لِمامُهاits brief visits
فَإِنَّ النَوى كانَت قَليلاً لِمامُها
Can a meeting-place for us and al-Mughiri be kept secret?
Can a gathering with us and the young man be hidden
For separation has paid but few visits
When intentions were few for gathering them
بِناto us وَبِهِand to him فَاِربَعنَso linger نَعهَدlet us see مُسَلِّماًoffering greetings
بِنا وَبِهِ فَاِربَعنَ نَعهَد مُسَلِّماً
عَسىperhaps أَنthat يُقَضّىmay be dispelled مِنfrom نُفوسٌsouls سَقامُهاtheir sickness
عَسى أَن يُقَضّى مِن نُفوسٌ سَقامُها
To us and him; so linger, that we may see him offering greetings,
Let four of us covenant submitting
Perhaps souls may be rid of their sickness.
That perhaps distressed souls may find remedy
فَقُلنَthen they said عِديهِpromise him a meeting دُلجَةَnight travel الرَكبِthe caravan إِنَّهُindeed it
فَقُلنَ عِديهِ دُلجَةَ الرَكبِ إِنَّهُ
سَيَستُرُناwill hide us مِنfrom عَينِa watching eye أَرضٍa land ظَلامُهاits darkness
سَيَستُرُنا مِن عَينِ أَرضٍ ظَلامُها
Then they said: Promise him a meeting when the caravan travels by night, for
We told her guide the caravan in the night
Its darkness will hide us from the land’s watching eye.
It will hide us from the eye of a dark land
