مُنِعتُI was denied النَومَsleep بِالسَهَدِby wakefulness
مِنَfrom العَبَراتِtears وَالكَمَدِand anguish
I was denied sleep by wakefulness,
Sleep was denied me by wakefulness,
from tears and anguish,
From tears and suppressed anguish,
لِحُبٍّbecause of a love داخِلٍlodged فيin الجَوthe body's interior (word begins)
فِthe body's interior (word ends) ذيbearing قَرحٍa wound عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver
for a love lodged within my body,
For a love nestling in my core,
bearing a wound upon my liver.
In a wound festering on my liver.
تَراءَتshe appeared ليto me لِتَقتُلَنيso that she might kill me
فَصادَتنيso she ensnared me وَلَمand did not أَصِدِI hunt
She appeared before me to kill me;
She appeared before me to slay me,
so she ensnared me, though I did not hunt,
So I evaded her, and did not evade.

تِgrowth (word ends) صافيpure اللَونِin color كَالبَرَدِlike hailstones
with a mouth of finely serrated, widely spaced teeth,
Of smooth, pure complexion,
pure in color, like hailstones.
With a mouth pouting like the full moon,

Heavy-hipped like an oryx, a bashful maiden,
Heavy as the water-drawer’s bucket
one among bashful women.

And she walks with a swaying grace,
And she walks seductively,
gently in her gait, her thighs apart,
Swaying gently as she treads.

مِthe bone (word ends) بَعدَafter الجَبرِthe bone-setting فيon الصَعَدِthe uphill slope
as one with a rebroken bone walks,
Like the pregnant she-camel walking
uphill, after it had been set.
Slowly after her burden is removed.
وَفَنَّدَنيand accused me of folly الوُشاةُthe slanderers بِهاover her
وَماand there is no فيin ذاكَthat مِنany (emphatic) فَنَدِfolly
The slanderers accused me of folly over her,
And the slanderers attacked me about her
yet there is no folly in that.
Though in that there was no scandal.
