I say to my two companions—and a plight like mine

Has been lamented by a man in agonizing longing

To two brothers like them, whenever

Sleep-banishing cares revisit him at night—

To my undoing and affliction, I met at noon

In upper al-Naqʿ a sister of Banu Tamim.

Then, when I saw in her

A smooth cheek upon a tall, well-formed body,

And the eyes of a startled oryx calf, and a mouth

Like chamomile, and a white gazelle's neck,

Her companions bent over her, keeping me away,

As women visiting the sick bend over an ailing man:

Noblewomen who had never lived in hardship,

    But in prosperity and ease.
