أَرِقتُI lay sleepless وَلَمand did not آرَقI lie sleepless لِسَقمٍfrom illness أَصابَنيthat struck me
أُراقِبُI watch لَيلاًa night ماnot يَزولُpasses طَويلاlong
I lay sleepless, but not from an illness that had struck me;
I watched a long night that would not pass.
إِذاwhenever خَفَقَتsank from sight مِنهُwithin it نُجومٌstars فَحَلَّقَتthen wheeled away
تَبَيَّنتُI discerned مِنamong تاليthe following النُجومِstars رَعيلاa troop
Whenever stars within it sank and wheeled away,
I discerned a troop of the stars that followed.
فَلَمّاthen when مَضَتhad passed مِنof أَوَّلِthe beginning of اللَيلِthe night هَجعَةٌa spell of sleep
وَأَيقَنتُand I was certain مِنfrom حَسِّthe faint sound العُيونِthe watchers غُفولاheedlessness
When a spell of sleep had passed at the start of night,
And from the watchers' sounds I was certain they were heedless,
دَخَلتُI entered عَلىin خَوفٍfear فَأَرَّقتُthen I woke كاعِباًa maiden with budding breasts
هَضيمَslender الحَشاthe waist رَيّاwell-fleshed العِظامِthe bones كَسولاlanguid
I entered fearfully and roused a budding maiden,
Slender-waisted, well-fleshed in frame, languid.
فَهَبَّتthen she sprang up تُطيعُobeying الصَوتَthe sound نَشوىtipsy مِنَfrom الكَرىsleep
كَمُغتَبِقِlike an evening drinker of الراحِwine المُدامِaged wine شَمولاheady wine
She sprang up at the sound, tipsy with sleep,
Like an evening drinker of aged, heady wine.
فَعَضَّتthen she bit عَلىon الإِبهامِthe thumb مِنهاof hers مَخافَةًout of fear
عَلَيَّfor me وَقالَتand she said قَدindeed عَجِلتَyou hastened دُخولاin entering
Then she bit her thumb out of fear
For me, and said, 'You have entered too hastily.
فَهَلّاthen why not إِذاwhen اِستَيقَنتَyou became certain أَنَّكَthat you داخِلٌwere entering
دَسَستَyou secretly sent إِلَيناto us فيin الخَلاءِseclusion رَسولاa messenger
Why then, once you knew for certain you would enter,
Did you not secretly send us a messenger in private,
فَنَقصُرَso we might turn away عَنّاfrom us عَينَthe eye مَنof whoever هُوَis كاشِحٌhostile
وَتَأتيand you could come وَلاand not نَخشىwe fear عَلَيكَfor you دَليلاan informer
So we might turn a hostile eye away from us,
And you could come without our fearing an informer against you?'
فَقُلتُso I said دَعانيcalled me حُبُّكُمlove for you all فَأَجَبتُهُso I answered it
إِلَيكِto you فَقالَتthen she said بَلrather خُلِقتَyou were created عَجولاhasty
I said, 'Love for you called me, and I answered it
By coming to you.' She said, 'No, you were born hasty.'
فَلَمّاthen when أَفَضناwe spoke freely فيabout الهَوىlove نَستَبِثُّهُwe confided it to each other
وَعادَand became لَناfor us صَعبُthe difficult part الحَديثِof speech ذَلَولاtame
When we spoke freely of love, confiding it to each other,
And stubborn speech grew tame for us,
شَكَوتُI complained إِلَيهاto her الحُبَّof love أُعلِنُI reveal بَعضَهُsome of it
وَأَخفَيتُand I concealed مِنهُof it فيin الفُؤادِthe heart غَليلاburning longing
I complained to her of love, revealing some of it,
And kept its burning longing hidden in my heart.
فَقُلتُso I said صِليgrant loving union مَنhim who قَدindeed أَسَرتِyou captured فُؤادَهُhis heart
وَعادَand became لَهُto him فيكِover you النَصوحُthe sincere adviser عَذولاa reproacher
I said, 'Grant union to him whose heart you have captured,
And whose sincere adviser now reproaches him for loving you.'
فَصَدَّتthen she turned away وَقالَتand she said ماnot تَزالُyou cease مُتَيَّماًenslaved by love
بِنَجدٍin Najd وَإِنthough كُنتُI was الصَحيحَthe healthy one قَتيلاslain
She turned away and said, 'You are still enslaved by love
In Najd'—though I was sound, yet slain.
صُدودَthe shying شَموسٍof a restive mare ثُمَّthen لانَتshe softened وَقَرَّبَتand drew near
إِلَيَّto me وَقالَتand she said ليto me سَأَلتَyou asked قَليلاlittle
Shying like a restive mare; then she softened and drew near
To me, and said to me, 'You have asked for little.
قَدَرتَyou gained access عَلىto ماwhat عِندَناwe have مِنof مَوَدَّةٍaffection
وَدائِمِand lasting وَصلٍunion إِنif وَجَدتَyou find وُصولاaccess
You have access to the affection we hold,
And lasting union, if you find a way to reach us.
لَقَدindeed حَلِيَتكَfound you pleasing العَينُthe eye أَوَّلَat the first نَظرَةٍglance
وَأُعطيتَand you were granted مِنّيby me ياO اِبنَson of عَمِّmy paternal uncle قَبولاacceptance
My eye found you pleasing at the very first glance,
And you were granted my favor, O cousin.
فَأَصبَحتَso you became هَمّاًa preoccupation لِلفُؤادِfor the heart وَمُنيَةًand a desire
وَظِلّاًand a shade مِنَof النُعمىbliss عَلَيَّover me ظَليلاsheltering
So you became my heart's concern and desire,
And a sheltering shade of bliss over me,
أَميراًa ruler عَلىover ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish مِنّيof me مُسَلَّطاًempowered
فَسَلso ask فَلَكَso for you الرَحمَنُthe Merciful يَمنَحُgrants سولاa wish
A ruler, empowered over whatever you wish of me.
So ask; may the Merciful grant you your wish.'
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her ياO سُكنَSukn إِنّيindeed I لَسائِلٌsurely asking
سُؤالَthe request of كَريمٍa noble man ماwhenever سَأَلتُI ask جَميلاa kindness
I said to her, 'O Sukn, I am indeed asking
As a noble man asks, whenever I seek a kindness.
سَأَلتُI ask بِأَنthat تَعصيyou defy بِناfor our sake قَولَthe words of كاشِحٍa hostile man
وَإِنeven if كانَhe is ذاpossessing قُربيkinship لَكُمwith you all وَدَخيلاand an intimate
I ask that you defy, for our sake, a hostile man's words,
Even if he is kin to you and one of your intimates;
وَأَنand that لاnot تَزالَshould cease النَفسُthe soul مِنكِof yours مَضيقَةًtight with worry
عَلَيَّfor me وَتُبديand you show إِنif هَلَكتُI perish عَويلاwailing
And that your soul should never cease to be troubled
For me, and that you raise a wail if I perish;
وَإِنand if تُكرِميyou honor يَوماًsomeday إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle أَتاكُمُhe comes to you all
رَسولاًa messenger لِشَجوٍof sorrow مُقصِراًspeaking briefly وَمُطيلاand speaking at length
And if you would honor, someday when he comes to you,
A messenger of sorrow, whether brief or lengthy in speech;
وَأَنand that تَحفَظيyou guard بِالغَيبِin absence سِرّيmy secret وَتَمنَحيand you grant
جَليسَكِyour companion طَرفاًa glance فيin المَلامِreproach كَليلاblunted
And that you guard my secret in my absence, and grant
Your companion a gaze blunted in reproach.'
