I fold my heart around its burning heat,

And seek union with my beloved in secret.

And keep vigil, watching the night and awaiting

The course of al-Simak and the setting of the Eagle.

How many have passed without my meeting you—

    Nights to count, and months!

And many a companion has spent the night keeping me company,

Tender of fingers and slender of waist,

Steeped in musk, making me an inner garment for

The sides of a long-necked beauty, fair of breast,

And, with apprehension, letting me taste their

Sweetness, like the taste of the choicest wine,

On a night that was blessed,

It lingered over me like the Night of Decree.

Until, when morning gave us notice,

And bright rays appeared from the glow of dawn,

She began to let tears stream from her eye,

And said, 'I have no patience away from you.'

In a new encampment, where she is burdened

By people among whom I see men of rancor,

Resentful at heart—whenever I turn toward them,

They look at me with hostile, sidelong eyes.
