    His remembrance banished sleep—

    remembrance of an aloof beloved—

after it was said he had sobered

    from pursuing sweethearts.

And when she turned aside, there appeared

a cheek in profile and an eyebrow.

She captured the heart when she let fly,

    one day at al-Manasib,

the day she said to women

    of Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib,

    and charming, noble ladies,

    like gazelles reared as pets:

"Rise and leave him, so he may speak

of his need, or voice his reproach."

Then the soft, pampered women withdrew,

    heavy in their haunches;

    then they swayed awhile

    at the riding-camels' resting place,

from nightfall until the moment when

the last of the stars disappeared.

He rose to scold me and urge me on—

    my companion—over my lingering.

He said: "Morning has found you; turn back,

    heading for Najd, not disappointed."

And the night passed, all of it—

that is one of the calamities.
