هَيهاتِfar away مِنfrom أَمَةِAmat (handmaid of) الوَهّابِal-Wahhab (the Bestower) مَنزِلُناour dwelling
إِذاwhen حَلَلناwe settle بِسَيفِon the shore of البَحرِthe sea مِنat عَدَنِAden
Far from Amat al-Wahhab lies our dwelling,
When we settle on the seashore at Aden,
وَحَلَّand settled أَهلُكِyour family أَجياداًAjyad فَلَيسَso there is not لَناfor us
إِلّاexcept التَذَكُّرُremembrance أَوor حَظٌّa share مِنَof الحَزَنِsorrow
And your family settles in Ajyad; we have nothing
But remembrance, or a share of sorrow.
لاnot دارُكُمyour home دارُناour home ياO وَهبَWahb إِنif نَزَحَتhas grown distant
نَواكِyour destination عَنّاfrom us وَلاnor أَوطانُكُمyour homelands وَطَنيmy homeland
Your home is not ours, O Wahb, if far away
From us lies your abode; nor are your homelands mine.
فَلَستُso I am not أَملِكُI have power إِلّاexcept أَنto أَقولَI say إِذاwhenever
ذُكِّرتُI am reminded لاmay not يُبعِدَنكِever send you far away اللَهُGod ياO سَكَنيmy solace
So I can only say, whenever
I am reminded, ‘May God never send you far, my solace.’
ياO وَهبَWahb إِنif يَكُit be قَدalready شَطَّhas gone far البِعادُseparation بِكُمwith you
وَفَرَّقَand scattered الشَملَtogetherness مِنّاamong us صَرفَthe vicissitudes of ذاthis الزَمَنِage
O Wahb, if separation has carried you far,
And the turns of this age have scattered our union,
فَكَمso many وَكَمand many مِنof حَديثٍconversation قَدindeed خَلَوتُI was alone بِهِwith it
فيwithin مَسمَعٍearshot مِنكُمof you أَوor مَنظَرٍa sight حَسَنِbeautiful
How many, how many a conversation I have held in private,
Within your hearing, or in a lovely setting!
وَكَمand how much وَكَمand how much مِنof دَلالٍcoquetry قَدindeed شُغِفتُI was enthralled بِهِby it
مِنكُمfrom you مَتىwhenever يَرَهُhe sees it ذوone endowed with العَقلِreason يُفتَتَنُis bewitched
And how much, how much have I been enthralled by coquetry
From you—any man of sense who sees it is bewitched.
بَلrather ماnot نَسيتُI have forgotten بِبَطنِin the hollow of الخَيفِal-Khayf مَوقِفَهاher standing-place
وَمَوقِفيand my standing-place وَكِلاناand both of us ثَمَّthere ذوpossessed of شَجَنِsorrow
No, I have not forgotten where she stood in the hollow of al-Khayf,
And where I stood, both of us sorrowful there;
وَقَولَهاand her words لِلثُرَيّاto al-Thurayya يَومَon the day at ذيDhu (possessor of) خُشُبٍKhushub (timbers)
وَالدَمعُand the tears مِنهاfrom her عَلىupon الخَدَّينِboth cheeks ذوhaving سَنَنِa flowing course
And her words to al-Thurayya that day at Dhu Khushub,
While her tears streamed in tracks down both cheeks:
بِاللَهِby God قوليsay لَهُto him فيwith غَيرِno مَعتَبَةٍreproach
ماذاwhat أَرَدتَdid you seek بِطولِby prolonging المَكثِthe stay فيin اليَمَنِYemen
‘By God, tell him, without reproach:
What did you seek by lingering so long in Yemen?
إِنif كُنتَyou had حاوَلتَyou sought دُنياworldly fortune أَوor نَعِمتَyou delighted بِهاin it
فَماthen what أَخَذتَdid you gain بِتَركِby abandoning الحَجِّthe pilgrimage مِنas ثَمَنِa recompense
If you sought worldly fortune, or delighted in it,
What recompense did you gain by abandoning the pilgrimage?’
فَلَوso if شَهِدتَyou had witnessed غَداةَon the morning of البَينِparting عَبرَتَناour tears
لَأَنbecause تُغَرِّدَit sings قُمرِيٌّa turtledove عَلىupon فَنَنِa bough
Had you seen our tears on the morning of parting,
At a turtledove’s singing upon a bough,
لَاِستَيقَنَتshe would surely have known غَيرَother than ماwhat ظَنَّتshe supposed بِصاحِبِهاof her beloved
وَأَيقَنَتand she would have been certain أَنَّthat لَحجاًLahj لَيسَis not مِنof وَطَنيmy homeland
She would surely have known her beloved was not as she supposed,
And been certain that Lahj was no home of mine.
