لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether أَقولَنI shall surely say لِرَكبٍto a band of riders
بِفَلاةٍin a wilderness هُمthey لَدَيهاthere within it هُجوعُasleep
Would that I knew: shall I call out to a caravan,
Would that I knew—shall I say to a band of riders
as they lie asleep there in the wilderness,
In a wilderness, where they lie asleep:
طالَماfor a long time عَرَّستُمُyou have halted for the night فَاِركَبواso ride بيwith me
حانَis due مِنof نَجمِthe star of الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades طُلوعُthe rising
“Long have you halted for the night—mount up, and carry me with you;
“Long have you halted for the night; now ride on with me—
the Pleiades are due to rise.”
The time has come for the Pleiades to rise.”
إِنَّindeed هَمّىmy sorrow قَدalready نَفىhas driven away النَومَsleep عَنّيfrom me
وَحَديثُand the musings النَفسِof the soul قِدماًlong since وَلوعُfull of longing
My anguish has indeed driven sleep from me,
Indeed, my sorrow has driven sleep from me,
and my soul’s inward talk has long been consumed with longing.
And the soul’s musings have long been full of longing.
قالَsaid ليto me فيهاabout her عَتيقٌAtiq مَقالاًsome words
فَجَرَتso flowed مِمّاat what يَقولُhe was saying الدُموعُthe tears
ʿAtīq said something to me about her,
Atiq spoke to me about her,
and at his words the tears began to flow.
And tears flowed at what he was saying.
قالَhe said ليto me وَدَّعbid farewell to سُلَيمىSulayma وَدَعهاand leave her
فَأَجابَthen answered القَلبُthe heart لاnot أَستَطيعُI can
He told me, “Bid Sulaymā farewell and let her go.”
He said to me, “Bid Sulayma farewell and leave her.”
But the heart answered him, “I cannot.”
Then my heart replied, “I cannot.”
لاmay ... not شَفانيcure me اللَهُGod مِنهاof her وَلَكِنbut rather
زيدَmay be increased فيin القَلبِthe heart عَلَيهاover her صُدوعُrifts
May God never cure me of her; rather,
May God never cure me of her; rather,
may the heart’s fractures over her increase.
May the rifts in my heart over her increase.
لاdo not تَلُمنيblame me فيfor اِشتِياقيmy longing إِلَيهاfor her
وَاِبكِand weep ليfor me مِمّاover what تُجِنُّconceal الضُلوعُthe ribs
Do not blame me for my yearning for her;
Do not blame me for my longing for her,
weep for me over what the ribs conceal.
And weep for me over what my ribs conceal.
